THE ART OF MARYAM MUGHAL. ( born 1987)

" Happiness often sneaks in through a door you didn't know you left open.......‌" Maryam Mughal

She is Maryam Mughal from across the border  . Another artist who has since crossed the narrow fence in her work to give you not only a sub-continental but an international feel. . Her subject is women;  happy and dancing .

You can see women in Flamenco or traditional Egyptian dance . She paints them in Indian classical dances like Bhartanatyam , Odissi , Manipuri and Kathak . You can see her women in folk dances like Gidda , Bhangra , Kalbelia (dance of the desert ) and Zikir .

She also paints rural women doing ordinary work like taking water from the well or attending to fields and family or walking through the  desert in search of water .

Her women are in Sarees , Lachha , Odini , Kurti ,Kalash and other subcontinental dresses . Along with the swirls and swings of their dance , women painted by her are easily identifiable subcontinental images .

And looking at her work , i can say with confidence that this artist has sound knowledge of Indian classical dances apart from " Mudras" associated with every dance form  . She has also painted horses, streets, Bazaars , railway stations,   moving trains and   classical singers in musical performance. Her work reflects inertia, energy and  movement. She has also painted Parvati (Shakti goddess) and  ancient Egyptian goddesses.

I saw her work . She uses oil , charcoal , pencil ,ink and water colours as her medium. I also saw some excellent sketches done by her . The personalities sketched by her include Marilyn Monroe, Angelina Jolie and many more . Her feminine sketches titled , Heart Broken, A Carefree Lady , Violated , Disappointed Girl  And Flying Girl, Abstract Nude 21 etc. are impressive . Her portrait of Manto is quite impressive.

                           ( Maryam Mughal )

Maryam writes:-

“ I paint my desires, my expressions and expectations towards life according to my mood swings.
For me, each of my painting is more like my own baby as I feel my soul in it.Contemporary modern and figurative is my favourite domain to work. My work largely explores women’s expressions. It is inspired by my ideas alone . Each piece is an expression of myself and my inner satisfaction. I have never worked in a ruled manner, as the artist’s eyes & hands are much more important than measurement and dimensions.I’m inspired by nature, pain and transitions. I love painting beyond constraints of time and space. My hobby is my profession so I don’t see myself retiring any time in life. I want to leave some work which makes me eternal.
The journey of the artist in me has faced every possible adversity; from rejection to alienation, from ridicule to exploitation but it only grew stronger and today when I look with in, I don’t see much of myself except than an artist ."
