A QUTRAIN IN KASHMIRI COMPOSED BY ME AND A PHOTOGRAPH OF SPRING IN WAIT.

 (SPRING IN KASHMIR) ..

HOW LONG COULD THE SPRING WAIT  FOR ME  ?? ...

To this photo , I am adding a quatrain in kashmiri composed By me today…..

Hupaaer Aaess Soanta Graekh Tchhandaan Ba Koat Goss,
Yapaaer Mutcharith me Aeiss Tafreeqa Daftar ….
Na Vaaethh Baagus Na Chhoav assi Soanta Vaava ,
Fakat Troav Oush Na Gayee Zaanh Nyaay Mokssar …
( Autar Mota )

There the spring’s Gracious abundance kept waiting ,
While over here , the offices of sorrow were still open for me.
Neither did I visit the garden nor take pleasure in the Spring Breeze ,
Shedding tears , i remained busy ,
And this predicament stayed put with me….

URDU POET ALI SARDAR JAFRI WROTE A POEM IN PRAISE OF RIVER JHELUM OR VITASTA

A PHOTOGRAPH OF RIVER JHELUM  NEAR PAMPORE TOWN IN KASHMIR..

THE RIVER ORIGINATES FROM VERINAAG SPRING ( About 80 Kms from Srinagar city close to Banihaal tunnel from kashmir side ) IN ANNATNAAG DISTRICT .

AFTER ENTERING AND COMING OUT OF WULAR LAKE , IT GOES TO BARAMUULA AND FINALLY ENTERS POK WHERE IT IS JOINED BY RIVER NEELUM NEAR DOMEL IN MUZAFFARBAD .

IT FINALLY ENDS UP MERGING WITH RIVER CHENAB NEAR TRIMMU IN JHANG DISTRICT OF PAKISTAN.

( Sardar jafri and  Jagan Nath Azad in writers conference organized by J&K Academy Of Art Culture And Languages..1985 Srinagar  )

The Sanskrit name of this river is Vitasta. The river finds repeated mention as VITASTA in Nilamata Purana. it is also mentioned in Rigveda as river VITASTA.

Ancient Greeks named it HYDASPES . kashmiris call it VYETH. The river is linked with history , culture and heritage of kashmir and kashmiris....

Long Back Ali sardar Jafri wrote a poem on Jhelum river .. I quote some lines from this poem titled “Jhelum Ka Taraana “

Maanind Joo e Zindagi Shaam o Sahar Behtaa Huun mein

Har Dam Ravaan Har Dam Davaan Har Dam Jawaan Rahtaa huun mein..

Vaadi mein Lehraata Huva

Sabze se Ithlaata huva

Sau Pech o Kham Khaata huva
Hanstaa Huva Gaata Huva ..

Maujon Ki Zufein Kholtaa

Qatron Ke Moti Roltaa

Maashooqa e Kashmiri ke
Pehloo Mein Itraata Huva …

Kheiton Ke daaman Mein Yahaan

Baagon Ke Saye mein Vahaan

Apni Sharaab e nab ke
Sagar Ko Chhalkaata Huva …

Maanind Joo e Zindagi Shaam o Sahar Behtaa Huun mein

Har Dam Ravaan Har Dam Davaan Har Dam Jawaan Rahtaa huun mein..

URDU POET TILOK CHAND MEHROOM WAS A GREAT LOVER OF KASHMIR

INDO PAK MUSHIARA MARCH  1952..

Indo Pak Mushaira  of 1952 was held at New Delhi  and presided over by well known freedom fighter Asaf Ali ( Husband of Aruna Asaf Ali ) . Asaf ali was Governor of Odisha at that point of time. You can also see Sufi Tabassum Noted Poet from Amritsar ( with a Karakulli type of cap ) in the picture .On his right side , you  can see young Josh Malihabaadi . To his left is Kanwar Mahinder singh Bedi . Close to mike and on  right hand side Asaf Ali is Tilok Chand Mehroom In Typical NWFP Kula and Pagri on his head. And on his right is Pandi Labhu Ram  "Josh" Malsiyani.

Sufi Tabassum  belonged to a kashmiri family from Amritsar that  migrated to Pakistan in 1947. Sufi Tabassum ( 1899-1878 ) wrote in three languages Persian , Urdu and Punjabi. He  was a successful  lyricist of Pakistani film Industry. The popular punjabi song " Meray shauq da nahin eitibaar teinuu, Aa ja vekh mera Intezaar Aa ja" is his composition.

Well known urdu poet Triloke Chand Mehroom ( 1877-1966 ) , Father of  Noted urdu Poet Jagan Nath Azad was also an acknowledged and respected urdu poet of the subcontinent .He was a patriot and secular personality .He visited kashmir many times prior to 1947 and happened to be  a great lover of its  natural beauty . He also felt intensely about the poverty that was visible almost  everywhere in kashmir at that point of time.

I share some lines from Tilok Chand Mehroom's poem on kashmir.......

“ Tu Reshmi Doshaale Duniya ko de Rahaa hai ,

Tera Jamaal rangeen Rakhshaan hai cheethhadon mein ,
Daur e Khizaan Bhi Tera hai rashq e sadh Bahaaraan,

Aey vaadi e Gul Afshaan……………..

Duniya ke Ahle imaan kehtain hain jis ko jannat ,
Sharmindaa ho ke tujh se Rooposh ho gayee hai,
Varnaa kahin to hotay Aasaar Bagh e Rizwaan,

Aey vaadi e Gul Afshaan…

I quote his grand son Adarshazad Arora ,

"He and Dr Iqbal exchanged letters, and I saw two letters to him from Dr Iqbal in my father's study room.

There was adabi nok jhonk too. Tilok Chand Mahroom's couplet is known.

"Chorhi  jo Iqbal ne rah e watan parasti,
ga kar naya tarana sara jahan hamara,
humne bhi ek misre mein baat khatm kar di,
sara jahan tumhara hindustan hamara"

In his teens, Tilok Chand Mahroom sent a poem for review to the great Akbar Allahabadi, who was in the last phase of his life. Akbar wrote back, "Apke asaar ache hain", and composed a rubai in praise. Mahroom  also wrote a rubayi thanking Akbar Allahabadi..

"Hai daad ka musthik kalaam e mahroom,
lafzon ka jamaal aur maani ki hujoom.
hai inka sukhan mufeed-o-danish amooz,
inki nazmon ki hai baja mulk mein dhoom".
( Akbar Allahabadi )

"Tabai mauzoon khudai bartar se mili,
taseer e kalaam kalb e muztar se mili,
aya mujhko yakeen ki shair hun mein,
jab daad-e-sukhan janab akbar se mili "

URDU POET SHAZ TAMKANAT WAS A LOVER OF KASHMIR

 SHAZ TAMKANAT (1933-1985 )

Mauj o Saahil Se Milo ,

Maah e Kaamil se Milo ,

Chashm e Purnam se milo ,

Gul o shabnam se Milo

Naaz Se Kham se Milo ,

Sab se Fursat se Milo ,

Noor o Nikahat se Milo

Aeisho Raahat se Milo ,

Sab -Nazaaron Se Milo ,

Nau Bahaaron se Milo ,

Shokh Dhaaron se Milo ,

Tum Hazaaron Se Milo ,

.....................................Sab se Mil Aao To

Ek Baar Meray Dil se Milo …..............

( Shaz Tamkanat )

I have been an old admirer of this composition of Shaz Tamkanat sung by Munni Begum,Ustaad Rais Khan and Vithal Rao from Hyderabad , India . Shaz was a unique poet from Deccan and his Language WAS  similar to Maqdoom Mohi Ud Din . A romantic poet , Shaz had an exclusive expression and lyricism .

Misaal e Shola O Shabnam Rahaa hai aankhon mein...

Voh Eik Shaks Jo Kam Kam Rahaa hai aankhon Mein ...

Kabhi Ziyaada Kabhi Kam Rahaa hai aankhon Mein,

Lahuu Ka silsilaa Paiham Rahaa hai aankhon Mein ....

( Shaz Tamkanat )

His real name was Syed Muslehuddin who became Shaz Tamkanat at a very young age .

His close friend , poet and film script writer Akhtar Ul Iman writes

“ Shaz is a unique person . He has the capacity to pull Modernism and classical tone simultaneously through his poetry . Unlike me , he is essentially a poet of GAZAL. He appears to be having closest encounters with life and its nakedness . Even this aspect is romanticized wonderfully by him through his poetry .”

In 1983, Shaz was awarded a doctorate degree by Osmania university for his thesis on Makhdoom Mohi Ud din. He finally served as a faculty member in Urdu Department of Osmania university Hyderbad .

zindagi ham se tere naaz uthaaye na gaye,

saans lene ki faqat rasm adaa karate thhay

ham baras padte the 'Shaz' apnii hii tanhaaii par,

abr ki tarah kisi dar se uthaa karatay thhay.

( Shaz Tamkanat )

And then my Favourite Gazal written by Shaz ..

I also love the Soulful rendering of this Gazal by Begum Akhtar .

Shaz was a lover of Kashmir. He visited Kashmir three or four times noticeably during the Jashn e kashmir Celebrations  . He also wrote a Poem on Kashmir . I quote some lines …

Arze Kashmir Mehaktay Huve nagmon Ki zameen

Teri Mehki Huyee Badmast Havaaon Ko Salaam

Nikhat Aabaad e jahaan Gulshan e Atr o Ambar

Teray aakaash Ki Madhmaati Gataaon Ko Salaam

Ganj e Paigaam e tarab Goshaa e Jannat aasaar

Teri Gaati Huyee Pur Kaif fazaaon Ko salaam

Teray Ashjaar Hain Insaan ki Bulandi ke Naqeeb ,

Teray Baagon Mein Mehakti Huyee Khushboo Ka Dhuvaan ..

Chamapayee Kheit Teray Jaisay Shafaq Ka bistar ,

Vaadiyaan Aisee ki Khwaabon ke Jazeeron Ka gumaan ..

His son FAWAD TAMKANAT ( Born 1962 ) is a talented artist from Hyderabad who has held many successful Exhibitions in India and abroad .

I came across a letter that Shaz had written to his friend and successful Bollywood script writer and Urdu Poet Akhtar Ul Imaan in 1959. Akhtar was struggling in Mumbai’s film world though he had made his name as a Poet of Modern Urdu NAZM. Shaz had asked for some money just three Hundred rupees that he needed .

I quote from the reply sent by Akhtar Ul Imaan

“ Dear Shaz ! I do not have money just now. But do write when you need this amount exactly and how long can you wait . Do you need three hundred or a lesser amount ? Shaz I want to show you the glimpse of my personal life .I fell seriously ill two years ago and in that period I took some amounts as loan from different people . Here is the list ..

1 Nasir Khan Rs500/=

2 Akhtar Hussain Rs500/=

3 Kamaal Amrohi Rs 200/=

4 Rajinder Singh Bedi Rs200/=

5 Ali Sardar Jafri Rs100/=

6 Majrooh sultanpuri Rs150/=

7 K A abbas Rs75/=

I had also to sell the ornaments of Sultana ( wife ). Presently She has been asking for Rs500/= as she wants to go to her parental house with children but I am helpless..Had I Rs300 with me at this juncture , I would have first solved your problem . But rest assured some money shall come to you”

And then with the release of Three films namely KANOON , MUGHL E AZAM ( One of the co writers ) and WAQT, Akhtar Ul Imaan Suddenly shot into prominence . Akhtar Ul Imaan wrote memorable dialogues for B R Chopra's Waqt ( Chunayee seth ! Jin Ke Ghar sheeshe .... ). His Financial status Improved radically . He rose to a status where from he could call the shots .He bought a Flat and Booked two more Flats at Band stand .

Simat simat si gayee thii zameen kidhar jaata..
Me uss ko bhuultaa jaata huun varna mar jaata..
Kal uss ke saathh hi sab raaste ravaana huve,

Me aaj ghar se nikaltaa to kis ke ghar jaata.....
