INDIAN CONNECTION OF SVETLANA ( DAUGHTER OF JOSEPH STALIN )

                                                                        ( SVETLANA )

( ABOVE TWO PHOTOGRAPHS..  SVETLANA WITH FATHER )

INDIA AND JOSEPH STALIN'S DAUGHTER...

Reading the story of Romance between Svetlana( 1926-2011) daughter of Joseph Stalin (1878-1953) and Brajesh singh son of an Indian Raja and nephew of Dinesh Singh ,a handsome minister in Mrs Indira Gandhi's Cabinet. They met in 1963 inside a Hospital ward in Moscow where Brajesh , an Indian communist was admitted for removal of his Nasal Polyps .Svetlana had her Tonsils removed in the same Hospital. Both were patients. The two convalescents would discuss Rabindranath Tagore . Svetlana was reading a Book written by Tagore that she had found in the hospital’s library. They felt attracted to each other . Once out from the Hospital , they kept meeting .

The couple decided to live together and get married. The registration of this marriage was declined in Russia. Brajesh had to leave Russia and was not allowed a re-entry. Later, Somehow , Brajesh managed a re-entry and they lived together for more than a year.. He was seriously unwell and in 1966, he breathed his last in Russia. Svetlana carried his ashes to India ( for immersion in River Ganga) as per Brajesh's wishes though they were never officially married. And Initially , Russians had dissuaded Svetlana from traveling to India. Feeling choked in her country, She sought political Asylum in India. GOI felt embarrassed in view of relations between the two countries and declined it.She went to the US embassy and got a political asylum. Moved to US , married and kept fighting the Ghost of her father all along her life. A man whom she loved intensely as a child and the man whom she disliked as she grew and came to know about many of his shady and suffocating acts.

Svetlana's mother committed suicide in 1932 .Stalin is reported to have publicly insulted her in a function and would generally speak to her in a very harsh and abusive language.

Svetlana's married life was tumultuous and full of troubles. She married thrice after her first marriage with Gregory Morozov in 1944 .At that time, she was just 17. Her first marriage lasted for three years. She married again in 1949 and this marriage also lasted for three years. Her third Marriage in 1962 lasted for one year only. She moved to US in 1967 and in 1970, married an American .

And many of Svetlana's maternal uncles and Aunts were imprisoned or executed during the purge announced by the the Soviet Dictator.

Was Stalin responsible for the death of Svetlana's mother?

To know many unknown things about Stalin, his family and the tumultuous life of Svetlana, read 'Stalin's Daughters' by Rosemary Sullivan...

REMEMBERING POET 'AKHTAR UL IMAN " AT KANYA KUMARI

LATE EVENING TIME AT KANYA KUMARI .......

Over here , I was reminded of "Be’ Talauqi " or " Dissociation ", A Poem of late Akhtar Ul Iman ...
I quote the poem with My simple English rendering ...

(Be’ Talauqi )

Shaam hotii hai sahar hotii hai ye waqt-e-ravaan
Jo kabhi meray sar pe sang e garaan ban ke giraa
Raah mein aayaa kabhii merii himaalaa ban kar
Jo kabh i ukdaa banaa aisaa ki hal hi na huaa
Ashq ban kar merii Aakhon se kabhi Tapakaa hai
Jo kabhi Khoon-e-jigar ban ke mizshgaan par Aayaa
Aaj bevaastaa yuun guzaraa chalaa jaataa hai
Jaisay me kashmakash-e-zeest mein shaamil hi nahin

( Akhtar Ul Iman )

My simple English Rendering would be...

( Dissociation )

Evenings keep arriving ,
Mornings too continue their visit ,
This fleeting time ,
That fell on my head like a boulder ,
Sometimes stood in my path like the Mighty Himalaya ,
Sometimes twirled itself to become a problem that could not be resolved,
Sometimes dropped from my eyes as tears ,
Sometimes , like Poor Heart’ s Blood ,
 Appeared at my eyelashes ;
Today , totally unconcerned ,
This time moves past me ,
As if I don’t belong to the crowds
Struggling for Existence .

(Autar Mota).

Akhtar ul iman was a successful screenplay and Dialogue writer of Hindi Cinema.  In films , He was  mostly associated with BR Chopra films . He was the creator of the popular dialogue " Chunayee Seth..Jin ke apne Ghar sheeshe ke hon woh doosron ke gharon pe Pather Nahin pheinktay" for BR Chopra's Magnum Opus "Waqt"

A HAUNTING MELODY BY GEETA DUTT .."MY LOVE ! CALL ME NOT YOUR LIFE" ..'MUJHE JAAN NA KAHO MERI JAAN"

Geeta Dutt ( 1930-1972) was known as Geeta Ghosh Roy Chowdhary before her marriage with Guru Dutt .

In this photograph, Sitting in a Car, Geeta and Talat Mehmood arrive for a private show in London.

Geeta ji has sung so many songs in her inimitable voice. The songs continue to remain as fresh and sought after as these were when she first sang them. One song that preplaxed and confused me during my college days is..

"Mujhe Jaan na kaho Meri Jaan , Meri Jaan !"

And then one day when I understood the meaning of the lines, it became my all time favorite.
Geeta Dutt has moved many hearts with this song that seeks something beyond physical intimacy in love.I believe it to be the most intimate communication.A communication aimed at unity of souls . Such like communication pours out when two lovers start looking in the same direction rather than looking at each other's face.
Can a person be called your life? Isn't life also short-lived and not going to stay with us for ever?

Gulzar has proved himself a perfect sorcerer of words and thoughts by penning these lines. The music composed by Bengali actor and Musician Kanu Roy ( Died in 1981) is of a rare quality . Geeta Dutt sang it for Anubhav , a 1971 movie that had Sanjeev Kumar and Tanuja in lead roles.

Kanu Roy worked with Basu Battacharya . Another song that Geeta sang for Kanu is " koyee Chup ke se Aa ke " and this also remains my favorite.

"Meri Jaan!
Mujhe Jaan na Kaho ,Meri Jaan!
Meri Jaan!

Jaan na kaho Anjaan Mujhe,
Jaan kahaan Rehti Hai sada,
Anjaane Kya jaanein,
Jaan ke jaaye kaun Bhala..

Meri Jaan!
Mujhe Jaan na kaho, Meri Jaan
Meri Jaan!"

(Gulzar)

My English rendering would be..

My Love!
Call me not your life,
My Love!
My Love!

Dear Ignorant,
Call me not your life,
Over here, This life never remains forever,
Only Ignorants keep saying so,
Those who know,
Never do they move on such a path.

My Love!
Call me not your life,
My Love!
My Love!

THE WORLD OF HEAD AND THE WORLD OF HEART

THE TRAVELERS

( Photo Autar Mota... Kerala 2016. )

  Autar Mota Believes …………..

Thinkers, Intellectuals , Politicians ,Artists , Leaders ,scholars are also travelers through the world of Head and Heart. Some among this category , who have not journeyed through the world of Heart , have not contributed much for Humanity at Large . Many a people in this category who chose to ignore the world of Heart , passed on pain and suffering to the Humanity through their assumptions, presumption or suppositions . The heart alone is capable of giving warmth , moisture and empathy that leads to cohesion ,unity and Harmony .

AN IMMORTAL COMPOSITION OF S D BURMAN .."SUUN MERAY BANDHU RE "

SUUN MERAY BANDHU RE...

THE MAGIC OF SACHIN DEV BURMAN’S VOICE AND MUSIC IS IN THE SONG THAT MAJROOH WROTE FOR  SUJATA ( A  159   HINDI FILM BY BIMAL ROY )..

Sachin Da ( 1906-1975 ) was born in Tripura’s Royal Family and brought up in Comilla ( Bangla Desh) where he could not go back to live . He lived in Calcutta for many years but the city didn’t not recognize him. Bombay was a huge temptation and it was calling. Carrying his bagful of folk tunes that he had learnt from the rivers of his Native land , Dada arrived in Mumbai.

In Mumbai , he started blending his folk stock with exceptional beats and strokes and then adding the aroma of Thumri and khayal . The end result was an immortal Music for the subcontinent.
Never did he forget his Childhood companions Madhab and Anwar . Never did he forget the “Bhadrlok “ Mannerisms. A kashmiri shawl always hung loosely over his shoulders .

“Hota Tu Peepal , Mein Hotii Amar Lataa teri
Teray Galay Maala ban ke Parri Muskaati Re..

Suun Meray Bandhu Re
Suun Meray Mitwaa
Suun Meray Saathi Re..

“Jiya kahay tu sagar me hotii teri nadiya ,
Lehar bahar kartii apnay piya se mil jaati re,

Suun Meray Bandhu Re
Suun Meray Mitwaa
Suun Meray Saathi Re..

( Majrooh Sultanpuri )

My simple English rendering would be ………

“How if you were a Peepal Tree
And I , an undying Creeper,
would hang around
like a flower Garland ,
And keep beaming in delight.

My compassionate relation ! Listen ,
My Friend ! Listen ,
My Companion ! Listen ....

"My heart wishes ,
if only you were an ocean, And I ,
An approaching river ,
In merriment,
I would keep moving
To meet my beloved ……..

My compassionate relation ! Listen ,
My Friend ! Listen,
My Companion ! Listen .......”

( Autar Mota )

PS

(1)

LAHAR BAHAR is a Hindi word frequently spoken in UP..It simply means Joyfully and Happily . Not to be read as two words LAHAR ( Tide ) and BAHAR( Ocean ).In UP LAHAR BAHAR is spoken to convey extreme happiness , delight and a feeling of pleasure .

(2)

Peepal tree is a symbol of unity , coolness and Bonding in Indian Culture . It Provides shade and comfort to travelers , birds and animals . For these qualities , this tree is venerated . Torn by universal Love , many sat under this Tree to be one with their beloved . Ascetics , sages and carefree wanderers ( in search of ultimate reality ) also enjoyed its empathetic shade .

REMEMBERING MIR GHULAM MOHD RAJPURI (1921-2011).

MIR GHULAM MOHD RAJPURI (1921-2011).

In kashmir valley, Mirs of Rajpura Pulwama were progressive by all means and had understood the importance of Education much before 1947 . This thinking paid rich dividends to them. From this clan, Whosoever went for higher education , rose to senior position in various employment fields , Administration and Judiciary .

I have close friendly relations with Mohd Latif Mir from this Mir clan of Rajpura . He was a senior colleague in the bank . From a simple clerk , he rose to the coveted post of Deputy General Manager of Punjab National Bank through sheer Hard work after he qualified Associate examination of Indian Institute of Bankers . Latif Mir ( Now retired ) proved his mettle as a Decision taking functional Executive in Punjab and HP. Some years before his retirement , He learnt Hindi that he used in his work and speech. His elder brother retired as General Manager of another Bank.

One senior Mir from this clan happened to be Mir Ghulam Mohd Rajpuri . He was MA LLB( LLB from AMU in 1946) and hailed from a family that had land , orchards and progressive outlook.

I had two personal interactions with Mr Rajpuri sometime around 1980 or 1981. Those days he would sit under the shady chinar tree inside Old High court Premises Amirakadal Srinagar and gossip with his friends . These brief interactions made me to believe that this man had excellent command over spoken word apart from a clarity of conceptions, ideas and beliefs . He appeared to be widely read and had good knowledge of English Literature and western Philosophies especially those propounded by Hegel and Nietzsche. He had his own perception and interpretation of Historical events . His argument was logical , strong and convincing. He was Liberal and forward looking .

For some time , Mr Rajpuri was a speaker of J&K State’s Legislative Assembly(from 1964-1968) . He was also a Minister who held portfolios of Education, Transport, Industries and Health( from 1957-1962). He also did a successful stint in Journalism when he launched two News papers IMROZ ( weekly ) and JAHAAN E NAU ( DAILY ). He appointed his trusted friend Shamboo Nath Gurkha as editor of JAHAAN E NAU . This paper became quite popular with Jagan Nath Khaibri's satirical column . Write ups of Tahir Muztar and Parwaaz Qureishi published in JAHHAN E NAU were also popular. Mr Rajpuri never compromised with his policies and principles and gave full freedom to his journalists and editor .The paper also exposed some scams and Government came down heavily on its publication and circulation . Inspite of Political differences , he was respected by his opponents in the political arena .
His personal library had books to suit his diverse reading taste. He read books on literature, poetry, Philosophy, Culture, Economics, History, Politics and many other subjects.
A worldly person to the core , he never believed in bigotry of any kind .He was gifted with an exceptionally sharp memory.

Post 1990 , the Death and destruction (Due to Militancy and Terrorism ) in his mother land disturbed him ; But he never allowed his conviction to get drifted or carried away by any popular undercurrent .

Peace be upon his soul…

A POOR TOURIST GUIDE TRAPPED IN GLAMOUR . A WOMAN’S LEAP TOWARDS FREEDOM.. SHAILENDRA ‘S BEFITTING POETRY AND BURMAN DA’S IMMORTAL MUSIC.

" Raat Ko Jab Chand Chamkay, Jal Uthay Tan Mera
Mein Kahuun Mat Kar O Chanda, Iss Gali Ka Pheraa
Aana Mora Saiyaan Jab Aaye…
Chamakna Uss Raat Ko Jab
Milenge Tan Mann, Milenge Tan Mann

Piya Tose Naina Laage Re, Naina Laage Re
Jaane Kya Ho Ab Aage Re..”

“Aayi Holi Aayi, Sab Rang Laayi
Bin Teray Holi Bhi Na Bhaaye,
Bhar Pichkaari, Sakhiyon Ne Maari
Bheege Mori Saari, Haaye Haaye
Tan Badan Mora Kaanpe Thar Thar
Dhinak Dhin Dhin, Dhinak Dhin Dhin…

Piya Tose Naina Laage Re, Naina Laage Re
Jaane Kya Ho Ab Aage Re..”

“Bhor Ki Bela Suhaani Nadiya Ke Teere
Bhar Ke Ghagar Jis Ghadi Main Chaluun Dheere Dheere
Tujh Pe Nazar Tab Jaaye, Haaye Re Haaye
Jaane Kyon Baj Uthay Re Kangana
Khanak Khan Khan, Khanak Khan Khan

Piya Tose Naina Laage Re, Naina Laage Re
Jaane Kya Ho Ab Aage Re..”

"Jag Ne Utaare, Dharti Pe Taare.
Par Mann Mera Murjhaaye... Haaye
Un Bin Aayi- Kaisi Deewali
Milnay Ko Jiya Uklaaye...
Aa Sajan Paayal Pukare
Jhanak Jhan Jhan Jhanak Jhan Jhan

Piya Tose Naina Laage Re, Naina Laage Re
Jaane Kya Ho Ab Aage Re..”

( Shailendra )

My simple English rendering would be ......

" At night , When the moon shines up above ,
It just puts my being on fire ,
A request I put forth ,
“ Shine not over the lanes of my dwelling this moment ,
Come only after My beloved joins me .,
And shine bright on the night of our Union ,
Shine that night
when our souls and bodies merge…

Love ! My Eyes remain focused on you only ;
What more is Likely to happen ?
I don’t know …"

“Spreading colours everywhere ,
Here comes the Holi Festival .
If you are not around ,
What joy does Holi bring for me ?
My Friends fill their water guns
and sprinkle colours on me .
My sari is drenched now ,
What should I do ?
My body shivers and pulsates
Like A percussion instrument
throwing up musical beats.

Love ! My Eyes remain focused on you only ;
What more is Likely to happen ?
I don’t know …”

"A beautiful Dawn
On the bank of a river ,
After I fill up my pitcher
And start moving slowly ,
There , At that moment ,
My eyes Notice You ,
Unknowingly ,
My Bracelets start tinkling in delight ,
Creating a musical resonance all over .

Love ! My Eyes remain focused on you only ;
What more is Likely to happen ?
I don’t know …"

"This beautiful Earth ,
Brought down stars from skies ,
And still My heart feels Gloomy ,
Why so ?
Deewali has arrived
And you are not around,
How strange !
Eager goes this Heart to meet you,
Come Love ,
Come over now !
My anklets Jingle and call for you only…

Love ! My Eyes remain focused on you only ;
What more is Likely to happen ?
I don’t know …"

ACTOR DEV ANAND IN GUIDE .... O TRAVELER ! WHERE SHALL YOU GO ? WHO IS THERE WHOM YOU CALL AS YOUR OWN ?

VAHAAN  KAUN  HAI TERA ?   DEVANAND IN GUIDE

Vahaan kaun hai teraa,
Musaafir, jaayegaa kahaan
dam lele ghadi bhar,
ye chhaiyyaan payega kahaan
wahaan kaun hai teraa

“kehte hain gyaani,
duniyaa hai faani
paani pe likhi likhaayi
hai sabki dekhi,
hai sabki jaani
haath kisi ke na aayi
kuchh tera naa mera,
musafir jaayega kahaan”

“Tuney to sab ko, raah bataayi
Tu apni manzil kyon bhoolaa
Suljha ke Raaja, Auron ki Uljhan
kyon kachchey dhaagon mein jhoolaa
Kyon Naachey sapera
Musaafir jayega kahaan……”

“Beet gaye din,Pyaar ke pal-chhin
sapna bani woh raatein
Bhool gaye woh,
Tu bhi bhulaa dhe
pyaar ki woh mulaaqaaten
Sab Door Andhera,
Musafir, jaayega kahaan”

“Koyee bhi teri, Raah na dekhe
Nain bichhaaye na koyee
Dard se teray , koyee na tadpaa
Aankh kisi ki na royee
Kahey kis ko tu meraa,
Musafir jaayega kahaan”

( Shailendra )

.............My simple English Rendering   of this Great  Song would be …….

"Who is there whom you call your own ?
O Traveller ! Where will you go Now ?
Rest a while ,
No where shall you get this cool comfort ,
Who is there whom you call your own ?"

 “ The wise say ,
“ This world is an Illusion ,
Like a script written on water Surface “
Every one is familiar to it ,
Every one experiences it ,
Yet None could lay hold over it ?
Do You Own anything over here ?
Do I own anything over here ?
…………………………………O Traveler ! Where will you go ?”

"You , Who played A guide to others ,
You forgot your own Goal, Why so?
You , A majestic ,
Freeing others from troubles ,
Got knotted in weak strands ; Why so ?
Now , You ,
Like a snake charmer ,
Dance on your own Music .
……………………………………..O Traveler ! Where will you go ?”

"Those days are nowhere to be found now ,
Those moments of Love have also vanished ,
Those Nights ! Just Dreams now .
That person has forgotten all ,
You too forget it ,
Forget all those love loaded proximities .
Now Darkness remains the only travel companion for a long distance .
………………………………….O Traveler ! Where will you go ?”

“None waits for you over there,
None is on your look out ,
None cried in your agony ,
And None wept in your pain .
Now , Whom shall you Call as your own ?
…………………………..O Traveler ! Where will you go ?”

Peace be to the soul of Sachin-da for singing and composing Music for this Great Song. Peace to the soul of Devanand and Lyricist Shailendra ..

And long live Waheeda Rehman. None like you Madam....
