MAGRAYS OF KASHMIR

MAGRAYS belong to a hilly Rajput tribe who were known in the social hierarchy as THAKKARS . They lived in almost all hills surrounding various entry and exit passes to kashmir valley. That is the reason you find them all over in Kashmir and also in POK areas as well. This community became active during the period of Medieval sultans and by which time they had already embraced Islam.

Kalhana makes mention of some communities who were assigned the task of Dwarpatis and Margpatis (by kashmirian kings ) of various passes and entry or exit routes to Kashmir valley. Magray word comes from MARGPATIS ( Lords of the Roads ) , a title given to this group by Kashmirian kings . Surely these THAKKAR Rajputs of hills surrounding kashmir continued to use the title Margpati even after their conversion to Islam and later adopting other professions . With the passage of time , Margpati became MAGRAY or MAGRI in Kashmir . .

Jonaraja makes mentions them as THAKKARS. I quote

“ As the breeze carries with it the scent of flowers , even the prince was accompanied by all the THAKKARS who were the lords of the country as he went out of kashmira . Left by the THAKKARS , the army of *MADRA descended into kashmira in peace like a river without alligators.”

Srivara also calls them Margapatis and Margeshas in his Rajatarangini

.

Apart from protecting the Roads and passes to Kashmir , Magrays also joined Infantry of kashmirian kings more essentially the Sultans. .Some Magrays also rose to become commanders of infantry during the rule of sultans .Muhammad Magray and Malik Masud Thakkar were the commanders in the army of Sultan Zain ul Abdin when the Tibetean operation was launched by him..

History also informs us that Ibrahim Magray was a powerful Person during the administrative rule of Musa Raina sometime around 1501 AD . History also informs that MAGRAYS even went to meet Babur .I quote Baharistan i Shahi ..

“In agreement and collaboration with Ibrahim Magray, Musa raina took control of the domain of Kashmir and undertook its governance . ”

Page 11-61 Baharistaan I Shahi subhead 11.41 MUSA RAINA.

“ Malik Abdal Magray went to Babur Paadshah to seek his help … who issued commands to sheikh Ali beg and Muhammad khan to help him.Forthwith they proceeded to Kashmir. In 1528 AD with a group of Magrays in collaboration with Malik Ali and Regi Chak and Babur’s troops , entered Kashmir via *HAVAL . Malik Kazi Chak learnt about this advancing columns and marched to meet them . ”
* Haval is a village in shopian District of kashmir .

I also found Magrays presently inhabiting , Banihal , Doda , Ramban, shopian ,Handwara , Anantnag and almost all places in Kashmir valley and adjoining hilly areas . They are now a part of the kashmiri society . They have fair complexion and sharp features. They are educated and most of them are doing well in Government jobs , trade and other professions .Some of them are conscious of their past history . So long so much .

This temple is  known as Rani temple in Gulmarg. The temple was actually built by   Maharaja Hari Singh’s wife Rani  Mohini Bai  from Dharmpur’s sisodia clan of Rajputs  . Maharaja Hari singh had marrried three times before he finally married Tara Devi from Katoch Rajput family of Kangra who bore him a son .All the three wives  died issue less  ( Rani from Sisodia clan of Dharmpur   died during pregnancy in 1915 AD   )..

HAKEEMS AND UNANI MEDICINES IN KASHMIR

 To the  above Photographs, I am adding a brief story on Unani Medicines and  Hikmat in Kashmir

Abdul Hameed was my friend and class fellow in D.A.V School, Rainawari. He lived near the Ziyarat of Miyan Shah Sahib in Naidyaar locality. He was not so good at studies but his friends were mostly Pandit boys. Some boys from our class had seen him eating fried fish near Sheeraz cinema( Khanyar) on a Friday and accordingly, everyone started calling him Juma Gaada ( Friday fish ). The boys from D.A.V. school would go to this cinema for watching new movies on Fridays. I think no boy in our class knew other facets of Hameed’s personality.

Hameed was being trained by his father to be a Hakeem. His father was also a Hakeem who practised from a small shop in Naidyar Bazar of Rainawari. With Kashmiris opting for modern allopathic medicines, the customers at this shop were dwindling. Accordingly, quite often Hakeem Sahib would operate from his residence only. I knew the family very well as Hameed’s sister and my sister were friends and class fellows at Vishwa Bharti Girl’s school, Rainawari. From Hamid and his family, I came to know many things about the Unani system of medicine. I still remember Hameed’s Comments when I had typhoid 

“ Now that you are fine but I would have suggested you to take 'Chob i Chin'. It is the final medicine and a wonder drug. It can revive a dying man. ”

Later I came to know that 'Chob i Chin' was imported by Bohra traders ( Buhur in Kashmiri ) from Ladakh and its supply source was possibly somewhere in China. 

From Hameed's father, I came to know that everything that we eat has its Taaseer (effect) on our body. It could be Sarad ( cold) or Garam ( hot). And this Sarad o Garam was put to practice in almost every Kashmiri household. This Sarad o Garam knowledge came into clash with what I came to know about allopathic system later. Somehow, I couldn't reject one and subscribe to the other permanently.

 I also learnt that as per the Unani system, our body has seven components:

(1) Element (Arkan)

(2)Temperament (Mizaj)

(3) Humours (Akhlat)

(4) Organs (Aaza)

(5) Spirits (Arwah)

(6) Faculties (Quwa) 

(7) Functions (Afaal). 

The four temperaments of our body are air ( hot and moist), earth (cold and dry), fire (hot and dry) and water (cold and moist).

Unani system of medicine owes its origin to Greece thanks to Hippocrates. From Greece, it spread to Arabia and then to entire Central Asia. When Mongols attacked Persia and Central Asian countries, scholars and physicians of Unani medicine fled and brought this science to India. In India, Unani system flourished due to wide acceptance by the public. Ayurveda or the traditional Indian system of medicine also continued to flourish alongside. 

Most of us know about Hakeem Ajmal Khan (1868-1927) of Delhi who championed the cause of this system of medicine. A busy road and an equally busy market in Karol Bagh, New Delhi is named after this great Unani Hakeem and freedom fighter of the country. He is remembered for the revival of Unani medicine in early 20th century India.

 In Kashmir, Hikmat and Unani medicine were patronized by medieval Sultans. We know about Hakeem Shri Bhat who cured a poisonous boil that troubled Sultan Zain ul Abdin. We also know about Hakeem Ali Mohd (1906-1987 ) son of Hakeem Abdul Rehman of Zaina kadal Srinagar and Hakim Sham Lal Bhat ( 1900-1984 ) son of Hakeem Sehaj Bhat of Habba kadal Srinagar Kashmir who were known as Dast e Shifa ( Healing Hands ) in Kashmir.

I was told by Agha Ashraf Ali that his ancestors were royal Hakeems who came to Kashmir from Central Asia. And presently, I am told that a few Hakeems of Bagwaanpora, Lal Bazaar ( Hakeem Mehdi and Hakeem Altaf ) locality of Srinagar city are still engaged in treating patients with Unani medicines.

Many Youngsters smile and laugh when I tell them names of herbs and medicines which Hakeems in Kashmir would prescribe for ailments. Some names that I remember are:-

And later my friend Abdul Hameed forgot everything about Hikmat and the Unani system of medicines. He took up a job with J&K state Road transport Corporation while i continue to remember the names of these medicines and herbs.

Although we have many B.U.M.S. doctors and two ISM hospitals in Jammu and Srinagar presently, yet the dast e Shifa (healing hand ) of the traditional Hakeem is nowhere around.

And most of the B.U.M.S. doctors prescribe allopathic medicines. So many quacks are also active in this arena advertising their so-called wonder drugs for bleeding haemorrhoids, kidney stones, skin allergies, general weakness and sexual disorders (Popularly known as amraaz e Khufiya ).

                                                                      

In a recent interview, Hakim Mohammad Khalid Siddiqui, director of Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine, New Delhi said:-

"The biggest drawback is that surgery has not been developed fully in this system. There is also no treatment for an emergency condition such as an accident or heart attack. The system had a setback during the British rule and very little development occurred during that time. Even after independence, the government had been busy promoting allopathic medicines. Many do not take the Unani system seriously. "

I end this post with a couplet of modern Urdu poet Zubair Rizvi.

* Hakeem Ali Mohd ( 1906-1988 )was a reputed Hakeem of Kashmir. He started his practice at Zaina Kadal and later moved to Gojwara in Srinagar city. He became the president of the Jammu and Kashmir Tibiyya Conference, a chapter of All India Tibbiya Conference. His ancestors were Kashmiri Raina Brahmins who embraced Islam. Apart from being a practising Hakeem, he lived a saintly life.

GENEALOGY OF LONE SURNAME OF KASHMIRIS

 Lone surname   comes from LAVANYA.  Lavanya  is a Sanskrit word meaning Grace or Beauty  .
In kashmir ,Lavanyas were originally a   Hilly  Rajput  or martial tribe   where from they came down to  Kashmir valley  on account of employment with Kashmirian Kings .   People belonging to  this  tribe are   fair in complexion with sharp features.   Kalhana makes frequent mention of Lavanyas as a tribe in kashmir who were mostly used as  infantry soldiers  . Some Kashmirian kings used them in their fights against the DARDS . The Lavanyas were settled by kashmirian kings in areas close to  land of DARDS . That is why we find  people with Lone as their surname mostly residing in Kupwara , Handwara and  Baramula districts of Kashmir .  I quote Kalhana

“ Having discovered a loophole amongst DARDS , he incited the king to take possession of the Fort called Dughdaghata with the support of Lavanyas of LOHARA ”

Taranga 7  Verse  1171  Kalhana’s  Rajatarangini Translated by R S Pandit .

 Lavanyas  came into importance During the reign of Gopadeva (1171 to 1180 A. D.) . It can also be said that like  powerful DAMARAS , LAVANYAS  also rose to become king makers in Kashmir during 11th and 12th centaury A.D .This caste finds mention in Jonaraja’s chronicle but Srivara hardly makes any mention of this Martial tribe  . After the arrival of Islam in Kashmir , the economic activity of Lavanyas changed from being  infantry soldiers to farming and Agriculture . …..

WANI SURNAME IN KASHMIR.

Wani caste belongs to the Baniya community . Yes Baniya a name by which the Trader is known in the of rest of the country . Baniya is derived from Vanijya Word meaning Merchandise or Commodity meant for Trade and commerce and from Baniya comes the word Wani. Caste system or the Varnas also existed in kashmir before the arrival of Islam . Baniya belonged to Vaishya sect or Varna . I quote Kalhana's Rajataringani

." In his country , to which thronged numerous Merchants who came from different directions, there lived a Baniya named NONA from Rauhtika."

Taranga IV canto 11 Rauhtika is present day Rohtak ,..........

." Liberal like the cloud burst during the deluge let the Harsdeva be crowned king;This miserly Khasa is a Baniya . Let him be turned out of the realm."

 Taranga VII canto 773.

Baniya is again mentioned by Kalhana in Taranga VIII 128-134. Refer Translation of R S Pandit .

MIR SURNAME  IN  KASHMIR

In Kashmir , the title Mir was common among Syeds, and Mughals. According to Historian Hassan ,Syeds would prefix the word 'Mir' to their names e.g., Mir Manzoor and Mir Maqbool, whereas non Syeds used it as suffix to their names like Ali Mir, Qadir Mir etc.

Syeds came to Kashmir from Central Asia during the rule of Sultans and settled permanently here. They have lost all the traces of their descent by intermarrying with the Local Muslims. It is also a fact that Hindus of kashmir who converted to Islam also started using Mir as Prefix or suffix to their name in Kashmir .

Mir is also a title of Persian origin, a short form of Arabic Amir ‘prince’, ‘commander’.. Mirs are also found in Spain , Poland , Turkey ,Germany , Russia and  UK  as well .

WHO ARE BHATS, BHATTS OR BUTTS.

Bhatt or Butt or Bhat has Sanskrit origin meaning scholar or a learned man. It is believed that people of this clan ( Sarswat Brahmins ) were descendants of saints of Vedic period who lived on the banks of river Sarsawati. When this river turned dry, some people from this clan moved towards north and settled in kashmir valley though Some groups from this clan moved towards the western and southern parts of the country.. Some members of this clan moved to other areas of the subcontinent . People with castes like Goud, Rai, Rao , Bhatra ,Iyer ,Nambudiri, Malviya , Bhargava and Barot etc. are also Bhats by origin who are scattered in the length and breadth of the country . .

Brahma Bhatts are also Bhats or descendents of Rishis of Vedic period. This caste has been mentioned in Ramayana, Puranas, Bhagavad Gita, Buddhism and some Vedic scriptures .

In Kashmir Bhat continues to be popular caste . Kashmiri Bhats are also Sarswat Brahmins and after the entry of Islam in the valley , a large number of Hindu Bhats converted to the new faith . So is the history of Muslim Bhats of Pakistan and some areas of Afghanistan. Bhats are not to confused with Bhattis . Bhattis belongs to Yadu clan of  Hindu Rajputs . Like Bhats , Bhattis have also settled at many places in India and Pakistan .

In India , Bhats or Butts or Bhatts are presently settled in Gujrat , Haryana , Rajasthan , Madhya Pradesh , Uttar Pradesh , Bihar , West Bengal , Maharashtra , Goa , Karnatka , and Andhra Pradesh .One can find them everywhere in the subcontinent. Their contribution to Science , sports , Politics , Religion , Films , Banking, Music , Philosophy and other intellectual pursuits is second to none . ( A child Remembers )

What happened in that violent wind

With our family ?

Under fright , Entire village turned silent ,

The river too ran away

Leaving the Chinar trees to Nobody’s care .

Outside , crows in thousands joined to create

Aggressive noise all over .

And we stayed put in our roofless nests ,

Like the last bunch of grapes

Hanging in bewilderment from the vine .

Mother wept bitterly ,

Grand mother wept ,

The young chhitkoo wept ,

The Aunt too wept .

And With your hands folded before them

You requested everyone to keep calm.

The lights were turned off

To serve silence in the room.

In the lane outside ,

The crackers burst in chain

Creating fierce noise .

Papa ! yesterday when Kashmir was being telecast on Doordarshan ,

Snow clad mountains ,

Lakes ,

Waterfalls ,

Green valleys ,
