JOGILANKER BRIDGE OF RAINAWARI IN WATER COLOUR BY MASOOD HUSSAIN
( PAINTER FROM KASHMIR )
This is a painting by noted kashmiri painter Masood Hussain. This painting makes me emotional. This is Jogilanker Bridge of Rainawari or the Island town behind Dal lake of Kashmir ( as Nobel Laureate Sir V S Naipaul calls it in his Book Area of Darkness) . The Canal connecting Dal Lake with Nigeen lake passes underneath this bridge. The Building appearing in this painting on left side is the Shiva Temple complex and the show room of my friend Ajaz 's father was just opposite to this building . Ajaz's family was dealing in exquisite walnut wood carving items .They exported this stuff through their firm M/S Ghulam Hassan And Sons .

I spent my entire childhood in this area . I had my schooling in Rainawari . My friends , family and well wishers were mostly from this place. After the turmoil in Kashmir I could visit the place just twice. Both times in hurry. Both times to see mostly unfamiliar faces in otherwise familiar environment. Same roads . Same shops . Same Jogilanker Bridge..?Did I belong to this place?

I add lines from a Gazal of urdu poet Jaun Elia ….
Hum to jaisay yahaan ke thhay hi nahin.
Dhuup the saayabaan ke thhay hi nahin.
Raaste kaaravaan ke saath rahay,
Marhale kaaravaan ke thhay hi nahin.
Ouss gali ne ye sun ke sabr kiyaa ,
jaane vaale yahaan ke thhay hi nahin.
Ho Teri Khaak-e-Aastaan Pe salaam,
Hum tere aastaan ke thhay hi nahin.....................
