" PANUN KASHMIR " OR" OUR OWN KASHMIR' A POEM BY DR AYAZ RASOOL NAZKI

( DR.  AYAZ  RASOOL  NAZKI )

“ PANUN KASHMIR ’’ OR “OUR OWN KASHMIR” … A Poem By Dr. Ayaz Rasool Nazki

Dr Ayaz Rasool Nazki ( Bvsc, Mvsc. PhD) is a trained Veterinarian apart from being a well known poet, painter , writer and translator . Son of well known poet cum Broadcaster Mir Ghulam Rasool Nazki , Dr Ayaz has just completed his tenure as Director ICCR Kashmir Chapter . He writes in Urdu , English and kashmiri and has also authored some books of poetry and other writings . He also happens to be the brother of Farooq Nazki well known kashmiri poet and eminent Media personality .

Dr Nazki has made a  Documentary/ feature film  on “Sharda Temple “ in POK during his visit to this Shrine in July 2007 . The Nazki family hails from Bandipora where from they moved to settle in Rainawari area of Srinagar City .

Saw this Poem titled “Panun Kashmir” and was tempted to Translate it to simple English for wider Readership . The Poem reveals how strong were the Mutual Bonds of affection and good will between Pandits and Muslims in kashmir . A vegetable selling woman keeping separately a fresh stock of Dal Vegetables for a fatherly Pandit Buyer . A Pandit guiding his fellow Muslim colleague not to misuse his GP fund savings kept for rainy Day and secretly helping him with cash. A Butcher feeling reluctant to sell mutton to his Pandit Buyer on” Ashtami “ day.

The poem has also been translated to Hindi By Dr Agnishekhar .

Here lies the poem and my simple English rendering ..

Here is My simple English rendering of the poem ‘ Panun Kashmir ’

( Panun Kashmir )

Early in the morning,
After his daily worship and Prayers ,
The Pandit would come to Hari Parbat
And then To Kathi Darwaaza ,
A vegetable selling woman from Dal lake,
Would call him ,
“ Sir ! This way !
Sir, When you left your home ,
Your wife must have surely told you
To buy ,
Green Gourds from Dal lake ,
Two bundles of Carrots ,
Some Brinjals ,
Some tasty green leafy Haak.
Four bundles of * Pumbutch ( Green Lotus seeds) ,
Sir , All this here ,
Sir , Here separately for you to carry along”
“ Well , That is fine My Daughter ,
Let you prosper !
Let your husband live long !
Let you  have sufficient to eat ! "
And then At 10 AM,
The Pandit would enter his office ,
And on top of his files ,
would suddenly notice an application from Mohd shafi ,
There and then he would Call for Mohd shafi ,
And say to him ,
“ Dear, G P fund is never spent like this “
And then secretly ,
Would handover twelve Hundred
Rupees from his own pocket to
Mohd shafi ,
A secret that none would know .
At 5 PM, The Pandit would move out of his office
towards his home ,
Buy the latest English Newspaper ,
Published from New Delhi
From a vendor on Residency Road.
Reaching his own Mohalla ,
Near Agha Hamaam Locality ,
Enter a butcher’s shop,
“ How are You Dear *Qadda ( Qadir )?
Is all going well ?”
“ Yes Sir , All Well.
My pleasure to serve ,
Please order what you want ”
“ Dear give me
A Paav (250 gms ) from the upper leg portion “
“ Sir ! Today is *Ashtami,
Don’t You remember ?”

PS

Original kashmiri poem in 5 pages ..

*PUMBUTCH
The fresh variety of seeds held inside a green shell of a lotus flower . These seeds are soft watery white and sweet to taste . About twenty seeds are generally held on a spongy green bulb . Once exposed to heat and air , the shell of the seeds turns hard and black and the soft white seed inside dries up and changes its colour to yellowish brown .In Kashmir these lotus seeds are eaten raw . A good amount of dried lotus seeds are used by kashmiri Pandits as Homa Samagri ( Material for burning in sacred Fire or Yajna Agni ).

*QADDA
A short name used for Ghulam Qadir in Kashmir.

ASHTAMI..
Eighth day of Bikrami Calendar considered Auspicious by Hindus. Kashmiri Pandits do not consume any Non-vegetarian food on certain days specifically on Tuesday , Ashtami and many other auspicious days . Pandit Ladies eat only one meal on Ashtami after cleaning the kitchen and washing all the utensils afresh . Ashtami Fast in a Pandit Household is a part of kashmiri Pandit Tradition and culture .

THREE PHOTOGRAPHS OF HELSINKI FINLAND AND SOME COUPLETS OF AMIR KHUSRO

Evening time view near Helsinki Finland
(Photo August 2016).

I am adding A couplets of Amir Khusro to this photo...

Khusro daryaa prem ka, ulti wa ki dhaar,
Jo utra so doob gaya, jo dooba so paar.
(Amir Khusro)
Oh Khusro, the river of love
Runs in strange directions.
One who jumps into it drowns,
And one who drowns, gets across

This is a statue of Aleksis Kivi in Helsinki Finland. Kivi was a renowned Romantic writer of Finland .
I am  adding four persian  lines that Amir Khusro wrote for his master the great Sufi saint Hazrat Nizam Ud Din Aulia..

Az sar-e baaleen-e mun bar khez ay naadaan tabeeb
Dard mand-e ishq ra daroo bajuz deedaar neest;
Khalq mi goyad ki Khusrau but parasti mi kunad
Aarey aarey mi kunam ba khalq mara kaar neest.
(Amir Khusro)
Move away from my bedside, you ignorant physician!
Here sleeps a patient of love
Whose cure is the sight of his beloved alone.
Other than this , No medicine does he need.
The worldly people say "Khusro is an idol worshipper"
So he is ;so he is;
The people he does not need,
The world he does not need.

Evening time View near Helsinki  Finland..
(Photo August 2016)
And I am  adding  something that Amir Khusro wrote in honour of great Sufi Saint and his beloved master Hazrat Nizam Ud Din Aulia...

Khabaram raseed imshab ki nigaar khuahi aamad;
Sar-e man fidaa-e raah-e ki sawaar khuahi aamad.
(Amir Khusro)
I heard a news tonight ,
That you, O My beloved , would come this way..
Let this head of mine be sacrificed on the road along which you are likely to come riding...

A PORTRAIT OF POET SAHIR LUDHIANAVI AND LINES FROM HIS POEM HAVING PASSIONATE APPEAL FOR UNIVERSAL PEACE ...

 GIVE ME PEACE AS ALMS

I am a poet.I am a painter. I am a musician.I am a writer.I am the unknown common man .I am in my house. I move through paths that are deserted. A stranger. An outsider. Call me by any name . My hands are up. Up in Prayers .I stretch them out for Alms now. I knock every door. I seek no money. Not food. No shelter either.

I seek peace as Alms.I move with a begging bowl. Grant me this boon.

I add select lines from a poem of Sahir Ludhianavi..
Saathhiyon ! mainay barson tumhaare liye,
chaand, taaron, bahaaron ke sapne buney,
husn aur ishq ke geet gaataa rahaa
aarzoo-on ke aivaan sajaataa rahaa,
Me tumhaaraa mughanni, tumhaare liye,
jab bhi aayaa naye geet laataa rahaa
Aaj lekin meray daaman-e-chaak mein,
gard-e-raah-e-safar ke sivaa kuchh nahin,.........

Har taraf shor-e-aaho-bukaa hai,
Aur me iss tabaahii ke tuufaan mein,
Aag aur Khoon ke haijaan mein,
sarnigoon aur shikastaa makaanon ke malbe se pur raaston par,
apne naghmon ki jholi pasaare,
dar-ba-dar phir rahaa huun,
Mujh ko Aman aur tahzeeb ki bheek do,
Meray geeton ki lay, mere sur, meri nai
Meray majrooh hothon ko phir saunp do,

saathiyon.....

vaadiyaan lahlahaane ko betaab hain,
kohsaaron ke seene mein haijaan hai,
sang aur Khisht bekhwaab-o-bedaar hain,
inki, aankhon mein ta’ameer ke Khwaab hain,
inke Khwaabon ko takmeel ka roop do,
vaadiyaan, ghaatiyaan, khetiyaan, auratein, bachchiyaan ,
haath phailaaye Khairaat ki muntazir hain,
inko Aman aur Tehzeeb ki bheek do,
Maaon ko unke honthon ki shaadaabiyaan,
Nanhe bachchon ko unki Khushi bakhsh do,
Meray sur bakhsh do,
meri nai bakhsh do,
Aaj saari fazaa bhikaari hai
aur me is bhikaari fazaa mein,
apne naghmon ki jholi pasaare,
dar-ba-dar phir rahaa huun,
mujhko phir mera khoyaa huaa saaz do,
me tumhaaraa mughanni tumhaare liye,
jab bhi aaya,
naye geet laataa rahoongaa.

Saathiyon Maine Barson tumhaare Liye....

My simple English rendering  would be as under ...

Friends , For you and you alone ,
For years and so many years up till now ,
I kept weaving hopes and dreams
Dreams of Stars ,
Moon and spring seasons .
I sang songs of Beauty and Love as well.
I kept decorating those palaces of Hope .
Like your Musician , As and when I came your way ,
I brought newer compositions .

But today ,
Under my shirt’s ripped color ,
I carry Nothing except
the dust of this tiring Journey .

With wails and painful noise all around,
Trapped in this storm and devastation ,
Scrambling in these flames and blood all over,
Through the paths that wind through debris of destroyed building,
Through structures still erect with bowed heads ,
I move and keep moving .

Spreading the shirt of my songs .
I beg at every entrance .
I knock at every door.
Grant me a boon of peace and civility now.
Grant some tune to my songs ,
Grant some notes to my music ,
Grant some melody to my songs ,
Return all this once more to these wounded lips .

Friends …

Desperate are these valleys to Blossom ,
The Mountains carry thrill inside their stony chests ,
Carrying dreams of construction and development ,
Sleepless and awake are these Stones and bricks .
Help them to translate their dreams into reality .

Our Valleys ,
Our Plateaus ,
Our Fields ,
Our Women And
Our Daughters
Have spread their Hands
for a boon of peace and Civility Now .
Let the lips of our Mothers sparkle once more in happiness.
To infants , Grant some reason to smile once more .
Return Me those old Tunes and old Melodies .
Grant me these as boons now .

Among beggars and homeless people all around ,
Spreading a shirt of songs ,
A vagrant like me,
Moves from Door to door,
Seeking return of the lost musical instrument .
For sure ,This musician of yours ,
Shall come once more,
with Newer songs ..
Friends ! For you and you alone ,
For years and so many years ..

LONELINESS IS MY ADDRESS

LONELINESS IS MY ADDRESS NOW ..
( An elderly displaced  kashmiri Pandit woman in exile  outside her temporary  Camp accommodation in Jammu .The Child does not understand her suffering   . A silent sufferer  she continues . A Life of Deprivation and loneliness  after being  exiled  from kashmir valley by Armed  Militants ..

I am tempted to add lines from a Gazal of Poet Mazhar Imam......

And this loneliness that is not only her address but her sole friend and companion as well.
What does she say to her loneliness ? I believe Poet Mazhar Imam knows this as well.. I quote ..
Ab Kisi Raah Pe jaltay Nahin Chaahat Ke chiraag
Tu Meri Aakhri Manzil Hai Mera Saath Na Chhorr..
Log Miltay Hain Sar e Raah Guzar Jaatay Hain
Tu Hi Ek Hum safar e Dil Hai Mera saath Na Chhorr...

THE JOURNEY'S PATH IS ALWAYS CIRCULAR

ONE PAISA COPPER COIN...

" THE TRAVELER FINALLY REALIZES THAT THE JOURNEY'S PATH WAS CIRCULAR AND THE MONEY WAS JUST A COMPANION WHOSE UTILITY KEPT ON DIMINISHING GRADUALLY........."

(Autar Mota)

I am adding select lines from kaifi Azmi's poem Daayara ( Circle) to this photo....

Ro'z barrtaa huun jahaan se Aagay
Phir Vaheen laut ke Aa Jaata huun.....
Baarhaa taurr chukaa huun jin ko
Inheee deewaron se takraata huun.......
Koyee kehtaa thhaa samandhar huun me
Par meri jeib mein qatraa bhi nahin.....
Khairiyat apni likhaa kartaa huun
Ab to taqdeer mein khatraa bhi nahin....
Nabz bujhtii hai bharrakti bhi hai
Dil ka maamool hai Ghabraana bhi....
Raat andhere ne andhere se kahaa
Eik Aadat hai jiye Jaana bhi......
Ram kab Aayeingay maaloom nahin
Kaash Raawan hi koyee aa jaata........
Ro'z barrtaa huun jahaan se Aagay
Phir Vaheen laut ke aa jaata huun........

DOOR DARSHAN 'S FIRST SOAP OPERA " HUM LOG" HAD MESMERISED VIEWERS

THE UNFORGETTABLE ACTORS OF DD'S MOST POPULAR TELE SERIAL ' HUM LOG' .....
LALOO , BASESAR RAM , USH RANI ,BHADKI , MAJHLI , CHHUTKI, BHAGWANTI , NANHE, DADA JI ,PROF SUDHEER , MUSIC TEACHER AND SOME MORE NAMES ....

Vinod Nagpal 's role as Basesar Ram or the alcoholic father with a sarcastic sense of humour is still fresh in my memory... The roles and the characters created by Manohar Shyam Joshi touched hearts of the country's vast middle class. This serial reflected their hopes, aspirations, sorrows and core living.

Abhinav Chaturvedi who played the role of Nanhe adds:

" Senior Actors Sushma Seth and Vinod Nagpal would be brought in special Cars for the shooting while a matador would bring all of us to the shooting studio.I was paid rupees five hundred per episode. On completion 100th episode, a grand party was organized at Taj Palace. A wrist watch was gifted to me that is still ticking."
When Dadi ( Sushma Seth) was declared to be suffering from cancer, there was a hue and cry .Viewers expressed resentment .Letters and telephones were received at Door Darshan HQs .Manohar Shyam Joshi was contacted by so many viewers to change the script.Even secretary I&B contacted him and expressed an opinion that people wanted Dadi to live. He was advised to carry her role up to the last episode. Such was the level of public involvement in this tele-serial.

Almost all actors of Hum Log enjoyed fan following. Most of them moved to films after this serial.Rajesh Puri who played the role of Laloo, signed thirty fulms after this serial.

THE SERIAL OPENED WITH POETIC LINES
" ....Aaiye Haath uthaayein ..Hum Bhi...Hum Bhi". ..set to music by Great Anil Biswas.....
And then Ashok Kumar appeared at the end of each episode as the narrator for the show which drew a lot of viewer attention. He used to convey the moral of every episode.

It was a master stroke in terms of script written by Late Manohar Shyam Joshi. And then superb direction by late P kumar Vasudev .

At the peak of its popularity in 1985, about 85 per cent of the nation's TV viewers would tune into the serial for their daily dose of the soap.

The idea for HUM LOG came from the then I&B Minister Vasant Sathe after he saw a TV serial on Mexican TV channel (where he had gone for an official visit ). He is reported to have discussed even broader contours of the serial with late Manohar Shyam Joshi.
Manohar Shyam Joshi also wrote Buniyaad and Mungheri Lal ke Haseen Sapney for Door Darshan. After that the Baboos at Doordarshan rejected his 2 or 3 proposals .He moved to cinema but felt disappointed. Finally he moved to US to live with his son where he breathed his last.

UNFORGETTABLE. TO THIS DAY.......

VASANT SATHE AND KASHMIR

VASANT SATHE.(1925-2011)

"Indianness means equal respect for all religions. This is the core of Indian philosophy. Atal Behari Vajpayee's vision is soaked in this Indianness. His becoming PM is the victory of this 'sanatan' Indianness. If Atal Behari had not talked about this 'sanatan' Indianness, His party would never have come to power.

wrote Shri Vasant Sathe, in the March 29, 1998, issue of Panchjanya.

He was from Nasik. Well read, sharp and an upright person .He was a connoisseur of fine Arts and a lover of Kashmir.

Sathe  was well versed in Sanskrit .Though he  was staunch believer  in Secularism , Socialism  and   known  for his   leftist leanings , Bhagwat Geeta remained close to his Heart. His favourite quote   was:

“ Nasto Vidyate Bhavo  n’ Bhavo Vidyate satah “

“The unreal can never come into existence and the real can never cease to be “

He belonged to a reputed Chitapavan Brahmin Family that was closely associated with Freedom Struggle. His father was a well known High Court Judge . Vasant Sathe was a trained Lawyer.

He took active part in the freedom movement and removed the British flag and unfurling the Indian Tricolour at the district court in Nagpur during the Quit India Movement.

( With Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan )
Sathe  was known for holding his own free and Frank views on many issues .He was a vociferous supporter of Presidential Model for Governance of the country. He made his views clear on this issue both within his party and outside .

He authored about 8 Books out of which "Memoirs of a Rationalist" published in 2005 proved a best seller. In this Book Sathe pays a grand Tribute to Mahatama Gandhi . I quote :
'The most worth while facet of this great strength led by a frail person...was the tremendous spiritual influence of non- violence.'

His maiden speech in Lok sabha won him thunderous applause from all members when he pleaded for pension to Freedom Fighters. He went on to criticize the then Finance Minister Shri Y .B. Chavan, for his failure in not attending to this issue . This was something New to be seen when member of ruling party attacked his own minister. But that made all happy as he never intended to play politics over an issue . He said that he wanted to settle the issue for so many freedom fighters of the country as early as possible .

His line of thinking was always unorthodox. His style of writing was simply engaging.
As I&B Minister , He brought Colour Television to India . He commissioned Manohar Shyam Joshi to produce HUM LOG and engaged Ramanand Sagar for producing Televised version of RAMAYAN. He encouraged and fully supported Richard Attenborough to produce Gandhi.

.

I have something more to add.

I have heard Vasant Sathe( during early eighties of the last century ) in Srinagar . He had come for Shamim Ahmed Samim Memorial Lecture. He was impressive in his demeanor and oratory . He spoke inside the large Shamiyana erected near Residency Road press enclave quarters ( Near State Motor Garages ) .He quoted some memorable anecdotes relating Shamim Ahmed Shamim and was all praise for his friend and fellow Parliamentarian . His language was Hindustani, a mixture of Urdu and Hindi .I vividly remember the couplet of Allama Iqbal that he added to finish his speech .

Amal Se Zindagi Banti Hai Jannat Bhi, Jahanum Bhi
Ye Khaki Apni Fitrat Mein Na Noori Hai Na Naari Hai

About this Visit of Vasant Sathe , Noted Journalist Mohamed  Syed Malik Adds:

"Shortly before that first Shamim Ahmed Shamim Memorial lecture  ,  Vasant Sathe   had come to srinagar and  met Shamim Saheb to enquire about his health on behalf of Mrs Gandhi. In a letter delivered personally by Sathe , the then prime minister had recalled Shamim's outstanding role as a parliamentarian. She pointedly mentioned how she missed his lively speeches on issues of National significance. As was his nature, Shamim asked us not to make public this private letter from Mrs Gandhi. He replied thanking her for her concern and politely told her he needed nothing for than her prayer and good wishes for recovery. Only after Shamim's demise on May 1, 1980 we published the letter in the first volume of AINA NUMA containing reproduction of selected writings and speeches of Shamim.  Vasant Sathe's memorial lecture reflected his intellectual caliber."

I came to know later that a senior leader of his party from Kashmir valley had gifted him a Karakuli cap during that visit. He would use that cap occasionally for some time.

Som Nath Dhar also has a word of praise for Vasant sathe . I add the relevant excerpt from the Book.

."FROM PARTITION TO OPERATION BLUE STAR ...TALES OF A JOURNALIST , BUREAUCRAT AND SPY "
by Som Nath Dhar

I quote.from the book ..

“ I was lucky that the first minister I worked with as Director News AIR was Vasant Sathe . I found him to be fair minister , ready to accept reasonable suggestions from those who reported to him. He did not interfere in day to day functioning of the news room and allowed us a degree of autonomy. He was that rare breed of ministers who actually stood up for his staff , as he did for me on at least one occasion.

In 1982, Vasant Sathe was replaced by HKL Bhagat as minister for information and broadcasting .As Minister he was not only interested in furthering the interests of  congress party , but in bolstering his own image as well……. One day Bhagat asked us to cover three day SATSANG ( Religious function ) of his guru in Hissar . This was a bit too much for me .There were many such unreasonable requests resulting in tussles , but I managed to keep the worst out of the AIR news bulletins . Door Darshan did not always fare so well.”

For all his  Democratic , socialistic and liberal outlook, however, Sathe defended the Emergency.  And he remained steadfast in his Loyalty to Indira Gandhi even during her worst time . Post  emergency when Indira Ji Lost her 1977  Lok sabha election  from Rae Bareily to Raj Narain , sathe was among a few stalwarts who won  his seat.

( In 2008 Dr. Manmohan Singh released a Book  authored by Vasant Sathe )

He breathed his last on 23rd September 2011 due to a massive heart attack. He  had willed that all his body organs be donated to AIIMS after his death .This will was honoured by his son Subash Sathe with whom he lived at Gurgaon after the death of his wife. Subash  Sathe is an Industrialist .

So Long so much on Vasant Sathe…
