WHO IS KAKA HATHRASI ?

 KAKA HATHRASI
( HUMOUR AND SATIRE )

Two persons ( Shantiveer kaul and Shailesh Mota.) made a specific comment to my poem (that I uploaded recently ) that four lines composed by me are in Kaka Hathrasi style. Shantiveer ji ( son of well known  kashmiri Poet   Dina Nath Naadim ) reads and writes a lot. Add to this, he appears to be retaining a lot as well . I treat him as an encyclopedia on Urdu , Hindi , English and kashmiri literature . I am surprised about Shailesh Mota . Shailesh lives currently in South Korea . Totally cut off from Literature and poetry , he spoke Kaka’s another poem “Anpad Biwi “ to me over telephone yesterday word by word as I had spoken to him in his childhood.. I would read Kaka poems to him when he was a child. The satire and humour in these poems would bring smiles on his face . So did I read kaka to many cousins in our family . None has forgotten his name nor the punch lines from his poems .

“ Aaiye Aaiye ! To Aap Hain Kaka . Sunaa hai Hum par Bhi Khoob likha hai . Aap ki woh Agra Cantt or Cement permit Vaali Kavita Bahut Khoob hai.”said Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru to Kaka Hatharasi when a group of Hindi poets from UP were invited by Pandit ji to his residence in New Delhi.
And for readers I reproduce lines from both the poems from my memory apart from some lines from another popular poem of kaka .

Anpad Biwi ( Illiterate wife )

Anpad Biwi ko sikhlaaya
Patr ( Letter ) likho to aissay
Oopper ( Top ) Likho Praan Piyaare
Neechay ( Bottom ) Charnon ki Daasi
Pehlaa Patr Mila Uskaa to
Sar Chakraaya Mera
Oopper Likha Charan Dass
Neechay Praanon ki Pyaasi
( kaka Hatharasi )

And the poem which Pandit ji also liked

Lagaa Agra Cantt pe supply ka Tent
Kaka Bhi Lenay Gaye Duss Thelaa Cement
“Duss Thelaa cement?”
“Karaa Do File Arzi .”
Hum ne kahaa Huzoor Aap Ki Jaisi Marzi
Saade Paanch Maheenay Baad Lifaafa Aaya
Khola Uss mein Do Thelay Ka permit paaya
Aglay Din Bazaar mein Milay seth Harbans
Bolay Kaka Pistol Ka Dilvaavo Licence
Dilvaavo Licence Seth Hum Ne samjhaaye
Duss Thelay Maangay thhay Do Thelay Paaye
Issi Ganit ( Maths ) Ko Soanch samjh Kar Lambi Haanko
Pistol Chaaho To Licence Toapp ( Canon ) Ka Maango .

(Naam Bade Aur Darshan Chhotay )

Naam Roop Ke Bheid par kabhi kiya hai goar
Naam mila Kuchh aur to Shakl Akal Kuchh aur
Shakl akal kuchh aur Nain Sukh Dekhay Kaane
Babu Sunderlaal Banaaye Einchak-taanay
Kah Kaka kavi Dayaraam Ji Maarein machchhar
Vidhyadhar ko Bhains baraabar Kaala akshar
Pandit shanti swroop chalaatay dekhay Danday
Keh Kaka Jwala Prasad Ji Bilkul Thanday ..
( kaka Hatharasi )

Who is Kaka Hathrasi ?

Padamshri Kaka Hathrasi is the assumed name of Prabhu Dayal Garg (1906-1995 ) from Hathras in UP who was not only a poet of humour and satire but an authority on Indian classical Music and Dance. His style of humour and satire was mature and direct . He wrote very sharp satires on social, religious and political evils, greed and corruption engulfing India at that time. A stream of poets followed his style . Kaka Died on 18th September . This was his birthday as well and accordingly this day is now celebrated as “ Humour Day ” in the country .
Kaka has published more than 40 books of humorous verse . Almost all the books have been published by Hind Pocket Books New Delhi. I would suggest readers to go through his book JAI BOLO BAIMAAN KI . The subjects and issues that kaka has touched are more relevant today.Kaka had a large number of admirers which included Firaq Gorakhpuri and Harivansh Rai Bachan . I quote some select lines from this book ..

Neta Ji Ki car se Kuchal gayaa Mazdoor
Beech Sadak Par Mar Gayaa Huyee garibi Door
Gaadi Ko Le gaye Bhagaa-kar Jai Ho Kirpa Nidhaan ki
Jai bolo Baimaan ki

Mill Maalik Se Mil gaye Neta Namak Halaal
Mantra Pad Diyaa Kaan Mein Khatam huyee hartaal
Patra Push Se Pocket Bhar Di Shramikon ke shaitaan Ki
Jai Bolo Baimaan ki

Munn Mailaa Tunn Ujaraa Bhaashan Lachhedaar
Ooper Satyaachaar hai Andher Brashtachaar
Jhoothon ke Ghar Pandit Baanchay Kathhaa Satya Bhagwaan ki
Jai Bolo Baimaan ki

A SMALL TRIBUTE TO MEHJOOR AND NAADIM , TWO GREAT POETS FROM KASHMIR ..

Come, Gardener
Create the splendor of the spring ;
Make flowers bloom and nightingales sing
Create such avenues !
Weed out things that undermine the growth of
Roses in the garden ,
And look , thousands of smiling Hyacinths
Have thronged at the gate .

( Mehjoor )

                                         (Ghulam Ahmed Mehjoor - 1885-1952  )
MEHJOOR AND NAADIM

Peerzada Ghulam Ahmed Mehjoor ( 1885-1952 ) was born in Village Mitregaam in Pulwama district of kashmir . To him goes the credit of introducing Modernism in kashmiri poetry and bringing lyricism and folklores in it. It can be said that along with Abdul Ahad Azad , Mehjoor broadened the canvas of kashmiri poetry in a way freeing it from the clutches of Mystic, Devotional and Sufiana thoughts . His language was simple but laden with the folk lore of Kashmir . He spoke of its seasons , streams , Festivities, peasants , village girls , birds , flowers , Gardens ( Nishat and shalimar  gardens in particular ), mountains and communal harmony. He can also be called a very tall poet representing the school of Lyricism in kashmiri poetry after Habba Khatoon , Arnimaal , Rasul Mir and Mehmood Gaami. His poems attracted the attention of Gurudev Rabindra Nath Tagore who called him “ WORDSWORTH OF KASHMIRI POETRY “.Devendra Satyarthi Carried Mehjoor’s poems to Gurudev Rabindra Nath Tagore who in turn was highly impressed . In fact Satyarthi is the person who exposed Mehjoor to the world outside Peer-Panjal hills.

Satyarthi once wrote :

“ Mehjooor’s poetry is full of life’s passion , brotherhood , love and hope for the oppressed Mehjoor has a broad vision of life “

His poem ' Sahibo Sathh Chhum me tchaenni vuthh me asalaetch haavtum" or " My Lord ! I only live by a profound faith in you, Show me the Righteous path" appeals to every kashmiri. For a student a moving Prayer, For a Muslim a grand Naat and for a Pandit an intensely devotional Leela.

Mehjoor’s job as a Patwari enabled him to have a clear view of life as it existed in the core rural set up. He turned sympathetic to the plight and sorrows of peasants , youth and exploited masses . With a clear vision for kashmiri poetry and the shape it needed to take up, he embarked upon a look out task for a suitable poet to carry forward his mission. And then came Naadim .

And then one day Mehjoor heard Young Dina Nath Naadim for the first time reciting a poem in a Mushiara in Srinagar . So happy was the poet with this young kashmiri boy that he instantly said

“ THIS YOUNG KASHMIRI PANDIT BOY WITH A DASTAAR ( TURBAN ON HIS HEAD SHALL ) SHALL CARRY FORWARD MY MISSION . ”

In an Interview , Poet Naadim has informed that Mehjoor would always say “ Naadim is my sister’s son.I am his maternal uncle. “

Infact Naadim’s mother was from village Murran in Pulwama district and Mehjoor was also from a nearby village called Mitrgaam.

And Naadim proved himself to be the correct choice of Mehjoor . He entered this arena with a mind that was conscious of the changes that were sweeping across the world. His thought and outlook had a mixture of influences of great modern writers and poets like Tolstoy , Mayakovsky, Nazim Hikmet , Anton Chekhov , Tagore, Josh Malihaabadi, Chakbast and many more. He not only carried forward the work that Mehjoor and Azad had started , he also put enough space and dimension in it with his Operas , Poems , sonnets , Gazals , Free verse , Haaerisaat, Haiku all laden with Lyrical Modernism and Progressive thoughts..

When Mehjoor died, Naadim felt sad and gloomy for some time. . But then he also thought that Mehjoor was not a physical body alone but a part of the life that never dies. For him, Mehjoor was an inspiration and a bright thought that never dies . .He also wrote a poem on Mehjoor’s death, a portion of which is reproduced hereunder …

My english rendering of above lines would be as under…

(What can the fright of death do to An Erudite  soul?)
The news went wild at evening time ,
It traveled to city and the villages ,
It spread in all directions through the forests and the gardens ,
The bird conveyed it to the wind ,
The wind passed it on to the flower ,
The flower informed the cup
And the cup told the cup bearer( saaqi ),
The cup bearer broke the news inside the Tavern ( Bar )
And then  an uproar in the tavern .
Pots rattled and collided ,
Some insider heard a cry ,
“ Where has Mehjoor gone ?”
And then another cry in return declared ,
“ Here he is . Where did he go ?
Mehjoor is alive . Does life ever pass away ?
What can the fright of death do to an Erudite  soul ?”

MODERN MENDICANTS OR BABAS HAVE SHIFTED FROM HIGH HIMALAYAS TO CROWDED CITIES ?

THE UPLOADED PHOTOGRAPHS HAVE BEEN CLICKED BY MY FRIEND  TEJ PARTAP SINGH BROCA IN 2013. TOP TWO PHOTOGRAPHS HAVE BEEN CLICKED ALONG SHOPIAN JAMMU ROAD OR WHAT IS KNOWN AS MUGHAL ROAD WHILE THE  TWO PHOTOGRAPHS BELOW HAVE BEEN CLICKED  ON KOKKERNAAG - KISHTAWAR ROAD ALONG THE SIMTHEN PASS.

TO THESE PHOTOGRAPHS I AM ADDING  A POEM  REPRESENTING A COMMUNICATION BETWEEN A FATHER AND SON.

When I was a child , we heard stories about sadhus , Babas and other religious people going to Himalayas for Meditation and  penance . Away from the glare and noise of cities ,  they lived in jungles in close company of mother nature .I think nothing of this sort exists now . Now hermits and  Babas have come to live in spacious  Ashrams in cities  .

Based on this idea ,I started yesterday with a Dohaa . It was actually designed as a communication between a son and his idle father . The son is proposing to his father to become a Baba instead of idling away his time and energy.. I started with the dohaa where the son proposes to his father as under  ..
The son says
"Baba ban kar khol do
Eik Ashram meray taat
Bijli Nalka Muft hai
Bhog Chaday din raat "

“Become a Baba dear father
And  open an Ashram..
We shall get free electric power and Municipal Water
Apart from day and night offerings from public ”

I  finished this hypothetical communication just now by adding more poetry to it ..

The father( Taat ) reacts to his son's suggestion as under

“Beta Aaj Kahi tum ne hai
Bade Patte ki baat .
Gyaan Dharam hum Na Janoon
Ho jaaye na Maat .
Ho jaaye na Maat bataao aisaa Rastaa
Kuchh Jugaad Batlaao hum ko sastaa sastaa ”

“  Dear son ,  Today You have put forth a very wise suggestion,
But I am blank in so far as  knowledge or Religious Issues are concerned .
I am afraid , This venture may  fail.
For success of this project give me some tips
Suggest  some inexpensive  shortcuts for this venture son ”

The son now passes on some  suggestions to his Taat ( Father )

“ kesh Dharo Jogi Ban Jaao
Dhoti Kurtay Ghar mein Laao
Gyaan Dharam ki baat na bolo
Bank mein Jaa Kar Khaata Kholo
Uchhalo koodo Gaana Gaao
Doodh Piyo aur Phal hi khaao
Naamardi ka nuskhaa Becho
Kirpa Baanto Haath Uthaao

Taat Hamaare karnaa hai hum ko Bhi yeh kaam
Shuru Karo Aantaakshari Le kar Apna Naam”

“ Keep long hair and become a Mendicant ( Modern )
Buy some sets of Dhotis and kurtas .
Forget what you call Knowledge and Dharma .
Go to a Bank and open your account .
Learn jumping , Dancing and singing .
Drink Milk and eat fruits instead of cereals .
Sell prescription for Impotency,
Distribute kindness by raising your hands towards the sky.

Dear  Father I also have to follow this path now
So Start this venture by crying loud your own name .”

SHOE THEFT IS A WORLD WIDE PRACTICE.

SECOND-HAND OR OLD SHOES BEING SOLD IN SUNDAY MARKET  OF  SRINAGAR , KASHMIR .

SHOE    STEALING  PRACTICE    IN KASHMIRI  SOCIETY

Wherever a person is required to remove his shoes to enter a religious place or sit for food in a gathering or attend some social obligation where a large number of strangers are also present, he runs the risk of his shoes being stolen. Shoe thefts are a worldwide phenomenon. You find shoe thieves in Asia, Africa, Europe, Australia and America. They are active in hot deserts and also in cool and temperate Mediterranean climates. It is practised in churches, temples and mosques by people of all races and colours. No
caste, colour or religious divide exists for this adventure. In India, a social sanction has been accorded to this practice in marriages when shoes of the bridegroom are stolen by youngsters demanding cash in lieu thereof.

SHOE  THEFTS  IN KASHMIRI SOCIETY

“ ' Tse yuunn vobaah. Tse pyon aata-shaq. Tse gatssienn dast e kassiyaan . Hataa tse draaiyaa Holleijj . Tse goya  phaallij. Guss  tse gatchhinnaya Kaambal. Goya badanuss Nosoor.  Haa  boot tchooro . Goyaa gaadi tal Khor ya boot laagithh…. Pyokhaa  *Ali Jaanus pyaath. Guss tse tchatanyaa karan Nagareik doctor ** Bhanan hedrooniss munz yudd.Tse nyoothha Mohd Sidiquss nov boot. Tse goya garuss loot.  ‘ meaning  ‘Let Cholera visit you. Let you fall prey to deadly syphilis. Let you turn sick with blood dysentery. Let smallpox visit your body. Let a stroke attack you. Let jaundice attack you. Let your body get incurable wounds. O, you shoe thief! Let your feet be crushed under a vehicle when you wear these shoes. Let you become a regular patient of Dr Ali Jan. Let Dr B M Bhan( Surgeon ) of Karan Nagar open your tummy in  Hedroon hospital Srinagar. Did you steal  Mohammad Sidiq’s shoes? Let a gang of thieves loot your household.’ "  This is what Sondher Ded, mother of  Mohammad Sidiq   (  a baker  )  and our neighbour in Rainawari kept crying ( cursing the thief ) while moving in the Mohalla lane for about two hours. Mohammad Sidiq’s shoes had been stolen from a nearby mosque and Sondher Ded suspected that someone from Khadija's family had stolen the new pair of shoes. She had also seen Khadija's husband entering the mosque last of all. Khadija's family was comparatively poor. Khadija's family also lived in the same Mohalla.
" ‘Kyaah maahra kyaa chhuvaa Tchhaandaan . Me vanniv ‘.   meaning . ‘What are you looking for?  Sir, Tell me. ’ "

" '  Yemiss maahra niyakh nava Bata chappien . Yettien  thhavein
paanuss paetkin ta beeth batuss. Khabar kuss phoruss. Ye chhanass tchhenimitch nylon chappien thhavameth tamie badalah .’  meaning .. ‘Sir her new Bata sandals have been stolen. She had safely put them outside the shamiana just where she sat for the food. God knows who stole it. See the thief has kept a pair of   old, worn out and abused  cheap rubber sandals in place of her new sandals.' "

" ‘ Traath yimunn Chapni tsooran . Meharbaani kariv maahra ,taam kaddiv zudd . Pataa vuchhav kyaah karav.’  meaning …’ Let these thieves get burnt under lightning from the clouds. Please make some temporary arrangement. Let me see what can be done later on. ‘
This is what the host told the sufferer in that marriage. This is an actual incident in a  Kashmiri Pandit marriage lunch. I was joined by my colleague who had come along with his mother. His mother had insisted that she be allowed to take her sandals inside the marriage shamiana. Kashmiri Pandit ladies would generally sit over the sandals or shoes of accompanying children and eat the food.  While eating food, they would also repeatedly ensure that the shoes or sandals were there despite holding them so close. Such was the fear of losing your shoes or sandals in a marriage feast. I felt guilty for suggesting the friend to place the sandals and shoes outside the shamiana .
I know about many incidents wherein shoes or sandals of my relatives or friends were stolen outside some temples in Srinagar.  The shoes of one of my friends were stolen when he went to Nowhatta locality in downtown Srinagar city for offering his condolences to some close relative’s family wherein a   death had taken place. This friend told me that he had to keep quiet and cover the distance barefooted back to his house located in Ali kadal locality.
The practice of stealing shoes from mosques has not come to halt in Kashmir. Many friends keep complaining about this issue privately.  Shoe thieves in other social get-togethers/ events are also on a lookout for a good pair of branded or new shoes or sandals.
I also know of a friend’s son in law who lost his new shoe outside a temple in Janipur. The boy had come to his in-law’s house for a  *** Phirsaal feast. The newlyweds were suggested to visit a temple by his in-law’s family.  And the poor fellow had to come back barefooted.
To a large extent, shoe thefts have vanished from Kashmiri Pandit marriage feasts because shoes are not to be removed any more after the switch over to buffet system. Everybody consumes everything just standing and moving for his turn.
And then I am always surprised to find how some unusual second-hand stuff is sold in Sunday market of Kashmir. In Srinagar’s Sunday market, you find second-hand clothes and, internationally branded jeans, Chinese carpets, old Books,    quilts,  Blankets and strange but true, second-hand shoes of international brands like Nike, Adidas, Puma, Vans, and Converse etc. for men and  Rock And Candy, Steve Madden, Saucony, Life Stride, Jelly Pop and Skechers etc.for women.

‘ Aao aao. looto looto.
Bumbai ka maal .
Dekho  apni chaal .
Farangi ne bejaa .
Paaanch sau mein le jaa.
 Idhar Idhar .
Dekhataa kidhar .
O khan ! Joota pehchaan .
Thhuff ha sa thhuff .
Maashee Juff Juff.’

‘ Come ! Come !
Loot it ! Loot It !
This is Mumbai stuff
And see your style .
Europeans have sent it
Grab it just for five hundred rupees.
Here! Here !
Do not look anywhere .
O Khan, select a shoe for yourself.
A  surprise gift . Yes, a surprise gift.
Forget that old awkward gait.’

This is how the hawkers and footpath or charpoy traders in Sunday market cry to attract onlookers and pedestrians for buying the second-hand shoes in Kashmir. I asked a seller as to where from do these second-hand shoes come. To this query, he replied that they buy bundles of this stuff from traders in New Delhi or other places.
Plenty of this stuff is sold in Srinagar's  Sunday market or otherwise on footpaths or in Reddis by the hawkers. You need to select a good pair by putting your hand inside the shoe heap. Pay anything from Rs 500 to Rs700 and carry home a shoe of an international brand.  It could be almost a new pair.

Wherefrom do these shoes come? Could be stolen stuff from Asian countries traded through a well-organized network? I am not sure . It appears so. For sure these shoes have not been donated or given in charity for brothers and sisters living in poor and developing countries by their affluent well-wishers from developed countries. No Red Cross channel brings these shoes as is generally talked about.  some newspaper reports on the subject  may clear
lurking doubts
I quote some International newspaper reports on the subject
..

( 1 )Precautions for Tourists on “ Ooty Holidays And Tour packages” brochure

“When you go into a temple, you have to leave your shoes outside. A good security measure is to separate your shoes, so it will be difficult for a thief to find both of them quickly. A shoe thief will not wear one shoe while he is looking for the other. The best thing is not to bring expensive shoes to temples at all, especially a good new pair of sneakers (running shoes) or  Birkenstocks.”

(2)Newspaper report 16.07.2008

“The 48-year-old man was caught by a local man who had seen him loitering outside the Rayyan mosque in Qatar, reported Qatar daily ‘Gulf Times’ on Wednesday.
After making his prayers, the Qatari had discovered his $100 shoes had gone missing and after walking barefoot to his car he again noticed the Egyptian, this time carrying a bag about a kilometre from the scene of the crime. When he was confronted, the thief threw the bag over a wall. Inside were 15 to 20 pairs of shoes valued at about $1400.’ the newspaper said.

(3)Newspaper  Report DATED 05.05.2013.

“Thieves target  temples all over Thailand and there's big money to be made on second-hand shoes.”

(4)Newspaper report 30.06.2013.

‘Hollywood heart-throb Leonardo DiCaprio ( Titanic star )was sightseeing in the country and joined a group of fellow Americans on a trip to a hilltop temple in Kyoto, Japan. He was tense and upset when his shoes were stolen. The poor guy had to leave the place barefoot.’
(5)Newspaper report 25.02.2010.

‘Shoes are stolen from outside all the popular shrines right across India, including the dargah of the Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti in Ajmer, Shirdi, Siddhivinayak and Ganesh temple in Titwala. Tour operators running long-distance luxury buses, work in partnership with the hawkers. The buses are used to transport the stolen shoes across the country.’
(6)Newspaper report 25.02.2010.

‘Across the world, a South Korean man has taken advantage of the custom of leaving shoes outside, like a show of respect, before entering the mourning rooms. Most mourners are dressed up and wear their best shoes. Police recently arrested a  man named Park believed to be a master shoe thief in South Korea park would take off his shoes before entering the mourning rooms, pretending to be one of the mourners. When he left he would step into a more expensive pair of footwear and leave his old shoes behind. The police arrested Park after his warehouse was raided. They found 1200 pairs of shoes, carefully stored in sizes, ready for sale in a second-hand shoe business in southern Seoul’s Sueso district.’

(7)  A   Report
in  "DAILY MONITOR" UK year 2013.
‘A friend once told me of several incidents of theft that had taken place at their church in the city centre. “Last Sunday, while mummy had left our pew for Holy Communion, a man came and picked up her bag claiming she had asked him to keep it for her,” Jane narrated. She went on to say that the man was accosted outside the church by ushers. “He was taken away to Police and luckily, mummy’s bag was recovered.’
So, it is no secret that not everyone in a house of prayer is a genuine worshipper. Let me conclude this post with couplets from Urdu poets Nazir Akbarabaadi and Altaf Hussain Haali ( grandfather of noted filmmaker late K A Abbas ) who were also victims of shoe thefts.

“Apne jooton se rahien sare namazi hoshiar
Ek buzurgh Aatey hain masjid mein Khizr ki surat”.

( Altaf Hussain Hali )

(Those who come to offer namaz should take care of their shoes.
An old man with the countenance of  **** Khizr comes and, impliedly, steals them.)

And see what poet Nazir Akbarabaadi has to say on this subject :

“Masjid bhi aadmi Nne banaayi hai yaan miyaan
Banatay hain aadmi hi Iimaam aur Khutb-Khwaan
Padtain hain aadmi hi quran aur nimaaz yaan
Aur aadmi hi unn ki churaatein hain jootiyaan
Jo  unn ko Taadataa  hai so hai woh bhi aadami
khaaliq se ja milaa hai so hai woh bhi aadami
Jo naach Ddkhtaa hai so hai woh bhi aadmi…

( From Aadminaama by Nazir Akbarabaadi )

( Avtar Mota )

PS
* Dr Ali Jan was a widely respected physician of Kashmir with great diagnostic skills.

** Dr Brij Mohan Bhan was a well-known surgeon from Kashmir.
*** Phirsaal is a feast arranged for the bridegroom by the bride’s family immediately after the marriage. Generally, children accompany the boy for this feast. This custom is practised by  Muslims and Pandits of Kashmir.
**** Khizr is believed to be a righteous servant of God who possesses great wisdom or mystic knowledge. This is a couplet by Altaf Hussain Hali (1837-1914). Hali was about 20 years old then and had come from his ancestral village in Panipat to a Delhi. Hali had the good fortune of meeting  Poet Mirza Ghalib before the outbreak of the Mutiny.

TO THIS PHOTO I AM ADDING SOME DOHAAS OF KABIR ON TEST OF A REAL SADHU.

A SADHU , SNAKE AND WATER

There are many DOHAAS ( Two line poetic combinations ) that kabir has said about a real Sadhu . I do not remember the particular DOHAA which I heard long back from our school principal Late Shri Dina Nath Hanjura . The Dohaa in particular conveyed that to survive and be pure , a sadhu , a snake and water should be in continuous motion. A sadhu who gets fixed to a place and builds his resting place is surely tempted by world and its materialism. Suspect him as he can prove to be an ordinary mortal . Similarly a snake is likely to get killed if it rests at a place . The survival of a snake is motion alone . So does the rule of survival apply to water. Stagnant water is polluted and impure. Running rivers bring fresh and pure water. I quote some more Dohaas of Kabir on this issue .

Behtaa Paani Nirmal Hai Bandhaa to Gandhaa hoye
Sadhu jan Ramtaa bhalaa Daag na laagay Koye .
( Kabir )
Flowing water is pure and stagnant impure,
Better for a sadhu to be on move ,that shall keep him free from any impurity of mind.

Yeh kaliyug aayo Abbay Sadhuu Na Maane Koye
Kaami Krodhi Mas-kharaa Tin Ki Pooja Hoye ..
( Kabir )
This is kaliyuga no one is after a real Sadhu
People full of lust .Anger and cheap humour are worshipped .

Haansi kheil Haraam hain Jo Jan Ramtay Raam
Maaya , Mandir Istari Nahin Sadhu ki kaam
( Kabir )
Playfulness and Cheap humour are not meant for those who worship Rama
Building Temples , Creating Wealth and attachment to women are not the deeds of a sadhu.

Jaun Chalay sansaar ki Taun Ko Sadhu Naahin
Dinb Chaal Karni Karay Sadhu mat kaho Taahin
( Kabir )
Those who demonstrate greed in their deeds are not worthy of being called a sadhu .
He who moves in the worldly way Can never be a sadhu.

Sadhu kahaavan Kathin hai Lambaa peid khajoor
Chaday to Chaakhay prem russ Giray to chaknaachoor
( kabir )
Spirituality is a tough path like the tall Date tree .
Those who reach the top, taste the sweetness of love ‘s labour and those who fall mid way fall to dust .
