KUNDAN LAL SEHGAL WAS A STUDENT OF THIS SCHOOL.

SRI RANBIR HIGH SCHOOL JAMMU...

Perhaps the oldest school in Jammu started by Maharaja Ranbir Singh as a Pathshala. The construction for the school building was started in 1872 over 40 Kanals of land in the heart of Jammu city and it was completed in 1884 by Maharaja Partap Singh. In 1905, it was named as Jammu Collegiate School and in 1965, it was renamed as Government S R M L Higher Secondary School.

The school happens to be a  heritage institution that had students like  Shri Anil Goswami (IAS),  Shri Narsingh Dev Jamwal,   Shri Balraj Puri, Maj Gen B.N. Dhar,  Shri R N Dogra ( well known Civil Engineer and educationist ), Prof. Ram Nath Shastri, Shri O P Saraf ( Journalist ) Pandit Trilochan Datt,  Kundan Lal Sehgal, Gen N C Vij and many more.

General Vij’s grandfather,  Shri ND Suri served as the principal of this school from 1949 to 1955. Those who served as teachers in this school include Sheikh Mohd Abdullah, artist Sansar Chand Baru and artist Shiv Nath Raina ( father of artist Mohan Raina ). Sh RN Mukherjee (1905 -1912) served as headmaster of this school for about 7 years. Shri Thakur Dass Bhandari also served as the headmaster of the school from 1918 to 1921. Others who headed this prestigious school include Shri  Sona Kaul,  Shri Abdul Aziz, Shri N D Suri (1949-1955 ), Sh N D Bali ,Shri Dev Dutt Mengi and Shri. Tej Ram Khajuria. I have personally known Sh Dev Datt Mengi. An excellent teacher and honest to the core.

Initially known as Ranbir Paathshala Jammu, Radio Kashmir Jammu also functioned from the premises for some time. For more than 10 years, the Information Department of J&K state also functioned from the premises of this school. The army also used a block as its base camp for about seven years.
