                                    ( TYEB MEHTA'S MAHISHASUR MARDINI )

INDIAN ART ON HIGH SWING....

aA 1934 oil on canvas done by Amrita Shergil and titled 'Little Girl' fetched a record price of 18.69 crores at Sotheby's  reecent  Mumbai Auction .
Tyeb Mehta's famous 'Durga Mahishasur Mardini was sold for 20.49 crores. A bronze sculpture by Sadanand Bakre fetched 1.88 crores in this auction named  BOUNDLESS INDIA.

A well known Artist recently told me:

" Indian Art and Artists are up and up in international market. Works of N S Bendre, Souza, Tyeb Mehta ,krishen Khanna ,KK Hebber ,Ram Kumar and many more are fetching astronomical prices."

About Mahishasur Mardini Maanya Sachdeva writes in QUEO (12/11/2018)

"Disturbed by the riots of 1992, Mehta saw this as an opportunity to create a topical artwork and, thus, Durga Mahisasura Mardini was born. The iconic visual of the goddess Durga killing a demon was harnessed by Mehta to give shape to a powerful idea—that anything anti-secular or anti-democratic will eventually be overcome by the spirit of India. On closer inspection, the colours of the Indian flag reveal themselves; Mehta was making a deliberate, political comment."
