MY NEW POEM ," THE STONES YOU DROWNED"

(The Stones You Drowned)

You pulled the idols from the riverbank
and threw them into the water,
stone after stone,
as if the river needed them desperately.

The river said nothing.
It kept going.

Years later,
the river came back.
Not angry,
just full.
It filled the lanes,
climbed the stairs,
sat in your kitchen.

And then,
knee-deep in that same water,
you started digging the riverbed with your hands,
looking for them.

The same gods
you had drowned.

You called their names
into the water that had taken them,
asking them to hold back the water.

There is nothing more helpless
than a man searching the flood
for the very stone
he himself threw away.
