( The confluence of Ganga and Yamuna )
This heart of mine is like a desert,
Like an ocean as well,
Or like the cool Himalayan breeze that
descends to the hot plains
To embrace the Indian Ocean.
At one moment, it is the Ganga River,
Next, the Yamuna River;
Sometimes the sacred confluence at
Prayag,
The living symbol of my land’s
civilisation.
It is also a passage
Through which the Hudson, the Seine,
and the Jhelum flow.
The Godavari, the Narmada, and the Chenab
run through this corridor only.
Here rise the marvels of Ajanta and
Ellora, the Eiffel Tower,
The Ranakpur Jain Temple and the
great Pyramids as well.
Here dwell Varanasi and Vrindavan,
Harmandir Sahib,
Lumbini, Sarnath, Bodh Gaya, Jagannath
Puri and Ayodhya too.
Here stand Trimbakeshwar, Kanchi, and
the sacred Tirupati Teertha.
Wherever you go,
Anywhere you go,
This is the path,
This is the way.
Here alone you witness
The ruins of the grand Martand Sun
Temple of Kashmir;
Here lies Harwan,
The abode of the Buddhist sage Nagarjuna,
The tiles and bricks of whose house
Were sold to the museums in Europe.
At times, this heart blooms like a
Mughal garden;
At other times, it lies desolate, ruined
like the temple of Goddess Sharda.
This heart, the seat of Rishi
Vasugupta and Abhinavagupta,
Where Shiva spoke to Goddess Parvati:
“Keep reciting the great Mantra:
Hari Om Tat Sat,
Hari Om Tat Sat.”
Even today, this heart resonates
With the sacred sound of Lal-Vāks;
It echoes the truthful message of Nund Rishi,
His compassion,
His generosity,
And his love.
Here you encounter songs of joy,
And from this chamber arise wails as
well,
Darkness and radiant light,
Smiles and falling tears.
At times, you notice its sheer
nakedness;
At others, its camouflage.
For you, perhaps a meaningless world,
Yet this world alone is our world,
Our darling world.
