SUUN MERAY BANDHU
RE...
THE MAGIC OF SACHIN
DEV BURMAN’S VOICE AND MUSIC IS IN THE SONG THAT MAJROOH WROTE FOR SUJATA ( A 159 HINDI FILM BY BIMAL ROY )..
Sachin Da ( 1906-1975
) was born in Tripura’s Royal Family and brought up in Comilla ( Bangla Desh)
where he could not go back to live . He lived in Calcutta for many years but
the city didn’t not recognize him. Bombay was a huge temptation and it was
calling. Carrying his bagful of folk tunes that he had learnt from the rivers
of his Native land , Dada arrived in Mumbai.
In Mumbai , he
started blending his folk stock with exceptional beats and strokes and then
adding the aroma of Thumri and khayal . The end result was an immortal Music
for the subcontinent.
Never did he forget
his Childhood companions Madhab and Anwar . Never did he forget the “Bhadrlok “
Mannerisms. A kashmiri shawl always hung loosely over his shoulders .
“Hota Tu Peepal ,
Mein Hotii Amar Lataa teri
Teray Galay Maala ban
ke Parri Muskaati Re..
Suun Meray Bandhu Re
Suun Meray Mitwaa
Suun Meray Saathi
Re..
“Jiya kahay tu sagar
me hotii teri nadiya ,
Lehar bahar kartii
apnay piya se mil jaati re,
Suun Meray Bandhu Re
Suun Meray Mitwaa
Suun Meray Saathi
Re..
( Majrooh Sultanpuri
)
My simple English
rendering would be ………
“How if you were a
Peepal Tree
And I , an undying
Creeper,
would hang around
like a flower Garland
,
And keep beaming in
delight.
My compassionate
relation ! Listen ,
My Friend ! Listen ,
My Companion ! Listen
....
"My heart wishes
,
if only you were an
ocean, And I ,
An approaching river
,
In merriment,
I would keep moving
To meet my beloved
……..
My compassionate
relation ! Listen ,
My Friend ! Listen,
My Companion ! Listen
.......”

Peepal tree is a
symbol of unity , coolness and Bonding in Indian Culture . It Provides shade
and comfort to travelers , birds and animals . For these qualities , this tree
is venerated . Torn by universal Love , many sat under this Tree to be one with
their beloved . Ascetics , sages and carefree wanderers ( in search of ultimate
reality ) also enjoyed its empathetic shade .
