Oculus was widely
used in the architecture of the Byzantine Empire. The circular opening
in the domes or ceilings used in Oculus architecture is designed to bring in
maximum natural sunlight . The circular opening in the centre of the dome or ceiling
wall also allows rain to pour in and make inside cool . Rain water is carried
away through special drainage system. Greeks and Romans used this architecture
liberally in Pantheons.
