A VISIT TO CAPITOL OR SENATE / PARLIAMENT IN WASHINGTON DC..

The capitol or the Senate building is an Architectural wonder .The inner side of the top floor or the dome that has white marble statues of Abraham Lincoln and many more leaders is exquisitely done .This portion is also known as Capitol's rotunda . Built in 6 years during nineteenth century , it is the tallest part of the Capitol and has been described as its "symbolic and physical heart . " The Apotheosis of Washington" is the beautiful and very impressive fresco painted by Greek-Italian artist Constantino Brumidi in 1865 at the inside top of the dome.. The figures painted are about 5 metres tall and clearly visible from the base .The walls and the ceiling of the top floor is full of sculptures and paintings depicting scenes from American life , history and freedom struggle. .From outside, Atop the Capitol dome is the Bronze Statue of Freedom, an allegorical female figure that faces east .
During this visit , I came to know that there is an immense contribution of African Americans in building the Capitol. They did immense physical labour as Brick layers , Masons , stone cutters and multipurpose workers . They quarried the stone used for the floors, walls and columns of the Capitol, sawed both wood and stone, and became skilled in brick making and Carpentry . They were involved in almost every stage of construction. The federal government relied heavily on them to ensure the new capital city would be ready to receive Congress when it moved to Washington from Philadelphia in 1800.
Total frisking and baggage X ray is done at entry point . You need to pay for the entry.
Prior to building of this New Capitol at washington, Congress or the senators would function from Philadelphia .
The U.S. Capitol has been built in successive phases over the past two centuries. The estimated historical cost of the United States Capitol as of 2003 was $133 million US Dollars .
