SAND COLLECTION IN RIVER JHELUM

SAND COLLECTION..A  painting by Masood Hussain..     ( Last photograph is a painting by artist Masood Hussain..All other photos by the blogger)

Sand is an important component of building material all over the world. It is dug out from dry river beds . It is also created by  crushing stones  . Quality and usage  of sand  may vary  . Some sand is used for plastering , some for the flooring , some for brick work . Source defines the quality and usage of the sand.

Sand in Srinagar is generally procured from Ganderbal area near Duderhaama bridge . This is a mud free sand and resembles the sand available in the plains of the country . Sand is also collected from river Jhelum at various places by special boats known as ' Bahatch ' in kashmiri. Generally quality sand accumulates near  river  bends. Jhelum sand is deep in the river bed and is qualitywise very fine . It needs to be washed to remove the last traces of  mud . This sand is good for plaster work. Sand from Jhelum is dumped on banks of the river  and supplied  to  people through a network of building material agents  in the city . Winter ,Spring and autumn are the best seasons to dig out sand and store it as the river is almost dry and the bed is easily visible .The sand collectors begin their day at 6 AM and finish it by 1 PM . They face too many hazards major being the biting cold during early morning hours of winter season   .One can see them always pushing long oars to the river bed to dig out bucket loads of the sand.

This painting from " Transparent Strokes"  series by artist Masood Hussain depicts the early morning activity of sand collectors in river Jhelum . The painting presents early morning ambiance around jhelum . The colors used by the artist create  a  feel of Spring season of kashmir.
