VISIT OF PRINCE OF WALES TO JAMMU AND THE STORY OF GGM SCIENCE COLLEGE JAMMU

 VISIT OF PRINCE OF WALES  TO JAMMU   AND THE STORY OF  PRESENT GGM SCIENCE COLLEGE ( JAMMU)

 Prince of Wales visited india  in 1905-1906. During this long visit,  The crown prince  (who later came to be  known as King George V) Visited  Bombay , Gawalior , Delhi , Peshawar , Madras ,  Jammu , Rangoon , Hyderabad,  Indore and many other places. He was presented with Gifts by almost every Ruler and Maharaja of the  then  princely states of india . When Prince of Wales visited J&K state , It was December /  winter time and the Royal Darbaar was in Jammu. History records that the prince was  Honoured at jammu Darbar on 10th December 1905 . Yuvraj  Hari Singh the Heir Apparent was selected to present Royal Tribute to the Prince.
Next Day ,  Grand Lunch and feast was organized for the poor in Parade ground Jammu  in  which  Hindus  and  Muslims of the city participated with fervour .  A   lunch was also organized by the Maharaja  for  beggars . 187 Maunds of sweets were  distributed .

And   in the Public reception  of Prince , Maharaja  declared that very shortly a  college shall be opened at  Jammu and the same shall be named after His Royal  Highness or  Prince of Wales .  Same year , Maharaja   had already opened a   College in Srinagar that came to be known as Sri Partap  College .  Though Jammu college was started in 1907 But  In 1910 ,  Sir Francis Young Husband  the then Resident  laid the foundation stone   of a Grand complex that came to be known as prince of Wales College jammu and presently known as  GGM Science college jammu. The college had a lush green   area of about 65 acres.

Initially subjects like  English, Mathematics, Chemistry, History, Persian, Sanskrit , Philosophy , Geology and Arabic were introduced .Later more subjects followed .

The Maharaja had a very cordial interaction  with the Prince . Sir walter Lawrence who had done entire Land settlement in the state in late 19th century ,  accompanied  the  crown prince even though he had retired from active service . And sir Walter Lawrence was a great Friend of Maharaja Partap singh  as he had stayed for more than 6 years in the state and also spent two harsh winters in Kashmir valley in connection with his work/ assignment .

Prince of Wales college actually started functioning  from April 20 1907 from the then Ajaib-ghar building  with  26 students  and  Sh R M Mukerjee as its officiating Principal. It was affiliated to Punjab  University Lahore  in 1908.  On September 18,  1912, the college shifted to present  spacious campus with Prof Robson as its Principal.

At Maharaja’s specific intervention ,  Dr D N Wadia  (1883-1945  )     the Doyen of Geology in India established Geology Department in the college in 1907 . Dr Wadia joined the college as Professor of Geology on 2nd July 1907  and remained in jammu till 1921. The state produced so many Geologists purely on account of Premier Geology Institution set up in jammu as early as 1907. The college became a premier Co -Education Centre in Jammu province when Girls were also admitted from 1931 onwards .  Later in 1944,  Maharani Mahila College was opened exclusively for women at kachhi Chhawni Jammu . Presently , Luthra Academy  is being run from the erstwhile  Women's College premises  at Kachi Chawni.

 On May 20 1948 , it was named as  Government  Gandhi Memorial college Jammu .The college enjoys a heritage status granted to it  by UGC.
