The system of naming towns and cities followed in ancient Kashmir preserved a genuine tradition regarding their founder. The appellation “Pura” is attached to the name of the founder. In the cases of religious structures, terms indicating the deity or the object to which the building was dedicated follow. Some examples are:-
(1) Avanti pura ......King Avantivarman
(2) Parihaspura....Parihaspura Keshva ,the deity.
(3) Kalashpura originally Kalishripura....Near Fateh Kadal,named due to the ancient Kali Temple.
(4) Gopalpura.....King Gopalvarman
( 5) Sopore originally Suyyapur .. Suyya ,the engineer in Avantivarman's court who founded the town.
(6) Shankerpura...Founded by King Shankervarman
(7) Kanispora- “Kanishkapura” (‘the town founded by King Kanishka.
(8) Padmapura, now called Pampur, was founded by Padma, the minister of King Vrihaspati, who reigned from A.D. 832 to 844.
