Dr MS Khuroo ( MBBS, MD, DM, FRCP, FACP MACP...)
Dr. Mohammad Sultan Khuroo is a world renowned
gastroenterologist from Kashmir who is a researcher , a teacher, and a grand
Human being ; all in one. He was Born at Kraltengh Locality of Sopore in an Educated family .
He did his MBBS and MD
from GMC Srinmagar followed by a DM from PGI Chandigarh.
He has been Professor & Head Gastroenterology Department
at Sher-I-Kashmir Institute of Medical
Sciences, Soura, Srinagar and also a Consultant & Head Gastroenterology and
Liver Transplantation, King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre,
Riyadh ( Saudi Arabia ) . He left for saudi Arbia in 1995 and returned in 2005.
0n his return to Kashmir, India, Prof Khuroo established a tertiary Care
Digestive Diseases Center in Srinagar. Apart from excellent patient care, this
center conducts extensive educational courses for the medical fraternity). The
center continues to indulge in research programs related to hepatitis E,
hepatobiliary parasites and upper GI cancer and is collaborating with national
and international organizations.
Author of more than 300 research papers that earned him national
and international fame , it was the discovery of hepatitis E virus which
established him as a discoverer world over . His other contribution in the areas of “Hepato-Biliary and Pancreatic
Ascariasis”, “Hepatic Vein thrombosis in pregnancy”, “Portal Biliopathy”, “PAIR
for Hydatid Liver” and “PPI in peptic ulcer bleeding ”
brought him into the world League of Original researchers in the field Medical science .
Dr. Saleem Kamili, Ph.D. and presently chief, Division of Viral
Hepatitis, CDC Atlanta, Georgia ( USA ) adds :
“ I have had the distinct honour of being Dr. Khuroo’s Ph.D.
student (1992 to 1996). This period I spent with him as a student taught me a
life-time lesson on how to pursue scientific research and gave me a rare
opportunity to know Dr. Khuroo as a person. This genius of a man with a

and would ask “go back to page this, go back to paragraph this or that, make
this or that change”. I find Dr. Khuroo

the world. Dr. Khuroo is a person of

new heights and excellence in providing the best of care to its patients. Even
when Dr. Khuroo was in Riyadh, he never stopped thinking about improving the
health care in the valley. He wrote a comprehensive health care policy document
that could serve as the guiding principal and could usher Kashmir valley in the
21st century state of the art medicine.”
He continues to spend
from his earnings for promotion of Original research . He continues to help the needy and poor without making any publicity or noise
about it. He continues to be a simple
, smiling , helpful family man . A man of truth and crystal clear Integrity .
