RASSA –SHUDH OR RASONT WAS A POPULAR WONDER MEDICINE  IN EVERY KASHMIRI HOUSEHOLD..

As and when our Mothers/ Womenfolk wanted to stop Breast feeding a baby , Rassa-shudh was used . The baby disliked the Bitter taste of the black Herbal extract paste and never sought Breast milk.

Rassa-Shudh or Rasont (Also known as  Rasanjana) is a crude, concentrated extract prepared by boiling the  Lower Parts of the Bark and  the roots or Berberis shrub ( A well known Himalayan Medicinal Plant )   in water. from the roots and stem bark of several species of Berberis  shrub. The solution is then strained and evaporated until a semi-solid Mass, Rasont, is obtained. 

 Rasont or Rassa-shudh paste was used on Eyelids externally to cure allergies and eye rashes .It had a cooling effect.. I vividly remember kashmiri Bohra shopkeepers keeping a stock of this Black herbal Extract ( semi Solid ) that looked like “Salajit ”. This wonder herb grew widely in Himalayas and was recommended by Vaids and Hakeems of Kashmir  .  

In our Households , we used it for skin rashes. A Pinch of Rassa Shudh Mixed with  a glass of water was gulped as Medicine for throat Infection, Jaundice , Intestinal Infection and fever .It was believed to be a cure for bleeding Hemorrhoids , Anal Fistula  and so many infections . The gargles of  Rassa –Shudh  or Rasont  with water were  quite popular in kashmiri Households . These were believed to be  useful in treatment of  mouth and tongue ulcers .
