A TURBULENT DAL LAKE
( Photo Credit .. Greater kashmir News Paper )
No kashmiri poet can match Poet
Dina Nath Naadim when it comes to creating sound effects in Poetry . "Shee Shee" and "Tzsi
Tzsi "for the tossing winds , "Tiriv Tee Tiriv Tee" for the singing Birds, "Thae’nn
Thae’nn "for the Bell or clock sound , "Krietch Krietch"for cracking sound of dry
leaves , "Girr Gir Garaar Girr" for the sound of movement of water laden clouds , "Sar sar Saraar sar "for the breeze sound and so many other sound effects that he
beautifully captures in his poems .
The inner Music And Imagery in Dina Nath Naadim’s poetry is
unmatched . It Creates positive Inertia for the listener . In the poem under
reference , Nature's Beauty , kashmir's Cultural Ethos and settlements along
Dal Lake have been used by the poet to draw images and convey Life’s movement
ahead .
Nature’s visible ballet all along the bank’s of Dal Lake .
The Gardens like open treasures . The Hills simply abode of Fairies . Chirping
Birds , tossing Winds , affluence and Poverty yet movement forward. In this
overwhelming environment of pursuit and velocity , Keep Moving and you shall
also have your turn.
Only Motion and inertia is what the poet recommends in this
spectacle that he observes all along the Banks of Dal lake .
I
add Naadim’s poem “Dal Bae’th Bae’th “ or “ Along the Banks of Dal
lake “.
About this poem Poet Farooq Nazki writes;
" It was Late sixties of the last century when Nadim sahib recited this poem at Tagore Hall srinagar . It became a trend. Many
established poets fallowed it. sound projected as expression was unique. it was
unheard of and Nadim was a pioneer in this art “.

My English rendering
would be as under ………
(“ Along the Banks of Dal lake “)
(1)
Look ! We are at Ishber Temple
The tinkling sounds come from bells over here .
There Lies that generous shrine ,
How passionately devotees sing Praises of Prophet over there
,
Who says we have walls amongst us ?
And you also keep Moving unrelentingly,
your Turn shall also come some day,
Keep Moving ..
(2)
These Bunglows over here reveal affluence ,
A different world exists inside them,
Those poor mud huts ,
Like scales on our wounds ,
Another world exists inside them,
And then over here,
You have wise and
unwise as well ,
And you also keep moving unrelentingly,
your Turn shall also come some day
Keep Moving ..
(3)
Aha ! Surrounded by singing Fairies ,
The narcissus flowers move In Palanquins
The Bumblebee moves with a sack ,
As if , A sanyasi is on the run,
An Alien ,
A nomad on the move .
And you also keep Moving unrelentingly,
your Turn shall also come some day,
Some day ,these door Locks shall open for you ,
Keep Moving …
(4)
(Look, in all directions ,
Look how tumultuous is the Dal lake ,
at this moment ,
Winds whistle as they pass by ,
There that colorful ( brick coloured ) horse driven chariot ,
with a gold coloured bridle
sprints ahead ,
And the waves from lake water toss up noisily,
Aren’t all these tied to life’s vital surge ?
And you also keep
Moving unrelentingly,
your turn shall also come some day.
Someday these door locks shall open for you ,
Keep moving …)
(5)
A Baraat Of Lotus flowers ,
Walking together on foot ,
Joyous and Cheerful ,
And this marriage event followed by ruin ,
For soon these shall be pulled out,
Tied together and
Carried away .
Victims to the
mistaken Beauty ,
These poor entities shall also fall.
And you also keep
Moving unrelentingly,
your Turn shall also come some day.
Someday These door Locks shall open for you ,
Keep Moving …
(6)
Incredible appears the Grandeur of Nishat Garden ,
As if , Treasures left open and unguarded .
There at Zabarwan, The Fairy took her bath ,
Awakening even Gods from their deep sleep ,
And then these rain drops
Move fast like bare feet crowds ,
And you also keep
Moving unrelentingly,
your Turn shall also come some day.
Someday These door Locks shall open for you ,
Keep Moving …
