' DOORI ROSTUYI YEZAAR' OR A PYJAMA WITHOUT THE DRAWSTRING TO HOLD IT AT THE WAIST
Pyjama is a popular lower garment worn by both men and women across India. It is a kind of loose-fitting trouser held at the waist by a drawstring. The name is a composite of two Persian words: pae, meaning “leg” or “foot,” and jama, meaning “covering.” There are many types of the Pyjamas depending upon the length, girth and tightness. We have a Sharai Pyjama, the Punjabi Ghuttana , Churidaar Pyjama, and the Farshi Pyjama . Many ancient texts in India mention some garments similar to the Pyjama like the Sutala, the Punga ,the Swasthana and the Chandrika .Another similar garment from ancient India was the chalana, a type of loose-fitting trouser popular in the Kushan period (30–375 CE). It appears that this lower garment used in India since ancient times was named Pyjama by the Mughals. It was used with Peshwaaz or Pirahan or Angrakha as its combination to cover upper body. Finally, the Kurta-Pyjama became the much sought after dress and worn by men of all ages.
Within the Islamic tradition, the Pyjama is also known as Izaar or Yezaar due to which the drawstring used to hold it at the waist is also called the Izaarband or Yezaarband. Door or Doori ( Naada ) is the Kashmiri word for the drawstring used to hold the Pyjama at the waist. Izaar or Yezaar resembles the Shalwaar .
“ Doori Rostuyi Yezaar”
(Pyjama without the string to hold it )
“ Ye maantan zun chhu doori Rostuyi Yezaar. Yi Laggi na tapaali ti “
( He is like a Pyjaama without a string to hold it. He can’t be of any use. )
That is how Kashmiris used to describe a person who , according to them was worthless . Sometimes, it was also used to describe a person who was timid or a person who did not stick to his decision . It could also be a man who seldom stood by his commitments .A person who was brave in words but timid in deeds was also known as" Doori Rostuyi yezaar".
When the Pyjama is without a string to hold it , both the hands also get busy in holding it lest it slip down. A Pyjama without a string keeps your hands also busy for nothing ...
