To this photo I add lines from a poem of Shantiveer kaul. Shantiveer kaul  writes in urdu and is son of  late shri Dina Nath Naadim  well known  kashmiri poet.   A sincere wish for a child of this generation...................

"""Hum se aage ka varaq, jis ka andheraa roshan
Jo abhi kuchh bhi nahin ho shaayad,
Uss mein sab sooratein imkaan si nazar aati hain,
Hum ne chaaha hai azeez,
Kal ki aankhon mein milay beenayee
Hum ne khaamoshiyon mein sochaa hai
Kuchh to hum saa hamaare baad rahay!
Jism jis mein ki dobaara se janam mil jaaye
Zehn jis mein koyee itihaas jiye
Waqt ki dhaar ko paani kar de ! """

To this photo I add lines from a Gazal of noted Kashmiri Poet Rafiq Raaz . The poet concludes with a prayer for peace and sunlight .

Feeir Sarsaai Wattan kochei gaelein

Taaf Gotsch Raah e Khudaa Shab Chhu Siyaah

( Rafiq Raaz )
The paths and lanes wear grief and fright
And the killer about to come out of his resting place,
Alas this darkness ! Alas this painful night !
“How should we trace ourselves now ? ”
This Worry creeps in everywhere ,
A little sunlight this way lord !
Alas this darkness ! Alas this painful night ....

AMBARAAN , THE ANCIENT BHUDIST MONASTERY ON THE BANKS OF RIVER CHENAB IN AKHNOOR

AMBARAAN , THE ANCIENT BHUDIST MONASTERY ON THE BANKS OF RIVER CHENAB IN AKHNOOR

The Budhist Stupas and remains of an ancient Budhist Monastery have been excavated at AMBRAAN village near Akhnoor Town . The excavations are being carried out exactly below the new Bridge over river Chenab just 28 Kms from Jammu city .The place is approachable via Janipora – Agore Road or Dumana -Akhnoor Road .

“ It was in 1973-74 that the villagers approached Archeological survey of India and informed that some strange constructions are hidden beneath the soil. Though small scale excavations were started in 1974 , yet massive work was undertaken in 2001 only and a treasure turned up linking Jammu with ancient Budhist civilization.. These are the remains of a Buddhist monastery that was active for about 900 years between the second century BC and seventh century AD, a period belonging to the pre-Kushan, Kushan, and post-Kushan Gupta eras.”said Mr Bhat who was supervising the excavation and maintenance at the site on 22.03.2012.

His Holiness Dalai Lama too visited the site in November 2011 and confirmed that the remains belong to an ancient Budhist Monastery. Locals give due credit to Dr B R Mani from Archeological survey of India for taking up the excavations on a massive scale in 2001.

“ Dr Mani put this village on world map. We saw Broken terracotta pots , rusted iron tools, beads ,silver and gold ornaments , moulds ,tiles and coins being dug out. Sir, This digging is presently confined to this enclosure only . We believe that many more surprises shall emerge if this entire area is dug.” Said an ex serviceman who came to talk to us .

The site is exactly on the banks of river chenab and I could see some Bhudhist students from  ladakh ( currently studying at Jammu  )enjoying the scenic view of river chenab near the site .Many Bhudhists from our state and outside have been visiting the site regularly.

“ Many Bhudhist now come to this place . We have put up some photographs of the excavations carried out by Dr Mani’s team in 2001 in that room. You can see images similar to the chinar leaf . This civilization has a linkage with the Bhudhist civilization of Kashmir especially the Burzuhaama and Harwan. Perhaps this must have been the last post of the Budhist civilization . See this digging photo . See those photographs of terracotta human body parts like the feet , palm and leg. The most significant findings for the site include stupas, a mound-like structure containing Buddhist relics, made of high quality baked bricks and surrounded by stone pathways, meditation cells and rooms.A three-layer casket set of copper, silver and gold containing bone relics and ornaments is another major finding of our excavations ”

added Mr Bhat .

I also saw some artifacts from this excavation at the Dogra Art Gallery in Jammu.

And something about Akhnoor town . Located 28 kms from jammu city , the town lies on the banks of river Chenab ( Chanderbhaaga ) . With Pakistan border just 10 kms away , the town has a sizeable presence of army . The old fort dominates the town. It was at Akhnoor that the ‘Raj Tilak’ ceremony of Gulab Singh ( who went on to rule the state of Jammu and Kashmir ) was performed by Maharaja Ranjit Singh .

GULMARG VIEW AND LINES FROM A GAZAL OF KASHMIRI POET RAFIQ RAAZ

SNOW IN GULMARG AND LINES FROM A GAZAL OF KASHMIRI POET RAFIQ RAAZ

Yaa Gaav Me Tchetuss Pyokh Naa Yuthh Sheen Vanuss Munz

( Rafiq Raaz )

Not that I did not remember and hail you in this snow bound woodland ,
But I felt afraid lest you too may freeze up in this jungle.
The sightseer over here shall take away this autumnal gentle wind from the garden ,
Pity ! I shall have to ask the colorful rose “ Would you drop your petals now?

HAS MAN FAILED TO CONQUER TIME ?????.

 Near Kufri Shimla
  Photo Autar Mota

Autar Mota feels that man has been attempting to control space and to a large extent he has been successful. But Time ! Alas ! Every attempt to conquer time has failed . At the most he could attempt extensions in time. No victory .Time remains a mystery for him and it does not unfold and lay bare before man. Their lies the struggle .

Do you agree ???????

AKHTAR UL IMAAN'S POEM AND A WINTER VIEW OF KASHMIR

A VIEW NEAR PALACE ROAD  SRINAGAR
WINTER 2011.

Akhtar Ul Imaan is my faourite urdu poet . I add his urdu poem Aitemaad ( Confidence ) in English translation to this photo .I do not know the translator but my sincere thanks to this unknown person  for this wonderful translation from urdu.

Aitemaad ( Urdu Poem in English Translation )
(Confidence )

The arrogant wind said ,
“ You are only a particle , I will blow you away ”
A wave surged forward and said ,
“You are just a straw , I will float you away ”
A flame of the fierce fire said ,
“ I will burn you away ”
And the land said ,
“ I will swallow you up ”
I tore the veil from my face, laughed and said ,
“ I am Solomon, son of Adam ;I am a man ”
( Akhtar Ul Iman )

“A facet of his writing can be compared to R.K. Laxman's ‘common man' who observes all that is wrong around him, all that is commercialised, and the erosion of human values. Some are activists, and then there are others who simply use the power of their pen.” Dr Gopi Chand Narang on Akhtar Ul Iman ‘s poetry .

“He never wrote ghazals as he felt that the form does not permit expression of original ideas and concept. He also believed that ghazals as a form had already reached its zenith by the time of Mirza Ghalib... so kept himself away from the tradition of ghazals. Iman would be remembered for his strong individualism” Khaleel Mamoon, former chairman of the Karnataka Urdu Academy on Akhtar Ul Iman’s poetry ..

KANGRI , ISBANDH AND KASHMIRIS

Kangri ( (Fire pot used by Kashmiris to keep their bodies warm during winter ) to be a part of kashmiri Psyche .It also continues to be so with people who are currently living far away from their motherland. I have seen kangri and Isbandh used in Bangalore, Gangtok and Delhi by kashmiris .Who does not burn the fragmented seeds called ISBANDH ( A natural Herb  ) in a kangri to welcome friends , guests and relatives to marriages or other auspicious functions . Some elders say that burning ISBANDH in a kangri wards off evil during festivities . Ladies bring out some seeds or ISBANDH from a decorated pouch , touch them to the forehead of the guest and put these seeds into the burning charcoal of the kangri to welcome the guests and wish similar happy functions in their families . The common dialogue heard at this time is
“ Poshtaa chhuyee “
“ Best Wishes for the function “
“ Vaarkaar Yetchunn Tchetie .Tchetie Laeginayee Kaaruss taar “
“ let God make it happen in your family as well. Let your affairs also get resolved
 ( Autar Mota )“.

The play is truly enjoyable .
