CRICKET AND KASHMIR

CRICKET AND KASHMIR

" You need not worry . This type of growth is curative . Even if the Biopsy report shows it as Edeno carcinoma , she can happily live for many many years to come. She has no secondary growth any where as far as we know. We checked her liver in particular though it was pulpy , it had no evidence of Metastasis. . Keep her under observation of Dr Jalali . I have not seen any attendent so faithful and concerned for his patient as all of you . That way she is lucky . I wish her fast recovery . Keep meeting ".

That is what Dr Farooq Mirza told me when i went to see him in his room in SMHS hospital Srinagar on the day of discharge of my mother .He was in Dr Jalali's team that had operated upon my mother in SMHS Hospital Srinagar in 1983 for a malignant growth in Sigmoid colon . She lived trouble free life till 1996 after that perfect surgery done by Dr B K Jalali even when the Biopsy report revealed the growth as Edeno Carcinoma .What a competent surgeon Dr Jalali had been at that point of time in kashmir .?What a great and efficient support Dr Farooq Mirza had been providing to all patients in Dr Jalali's ward at that point of time? I never forgot these two great men. I was also impressed by the mannerism and efficiency of young doctor Mirza who was a fantastic cricket Player as well , representing J&K state in Ranji Trophy. If i remember correctly , Dr Farooq Mirza was the first cricketer from kashmir to score a century in Ranji Trophy.Who does not remember his lovely catch to dismiss Kim Hughes in the match Australia v/s North Zone in 1978. His style and dash could convince any person that he was a true sportsman . So was Mushtaq Mirza from this family. Mushtaq was a leg spinner with a style resembling Chandershekhar. The eldest amongst Mirza brothers namely Mr Mohi Ud din Mirza ( Carpet Exporter )too was a great cricket player who represented J&K State In Ranji Trophy . He was a gifted all rounder . In fact cricket ran through the blood of Mirza brothers. They were cool , friendly and always full of warmth .Wherever they are, i wish them happiness and good luck .

Like Mirza Brothers , Kashmir produced many outstanding players of the game . We had Abdul Rauf the tall punjabi speaking player from srinagar who was a medium fast bowler in addition to being an outstanding batsman . He once scored 95 runs against Delhi team in a Ranji Trophy match played in srinagar, hitting Bishen singh Bedi several times across the boundary . We loved to see his game . We also had a fast bowler in the team known as Abdul Qayoom ( Nick Name Qayoom Channa ) . He was a terrific fast bowler. He broke the middle wicket of Akash lal once with his superb bowling . I do not know where Raza brothers are at present . We had Assad Raza and the handsome Ali Raza plying for the J&K team..We also had a player known as Khursheed Drabu . He was the fastest runner between the wickets . He was always smiling and quick. I came to know from a friend that Drabu sahib had migrated to UK where he rose to become senior immigration Judge .we would love to see the stylish Jammu Batsman Brijender singh or Mehboob Iqbal or the handsome Pervaiz Quireshi playing for the state in Ranji Trophy . Then we also had Girdhari Tiku and Sant singh playing for the state team in several Ranji Trophy matches . I would like to make mention of one jawahir lal ( Nick name Jawa Billoo )who too played in Ranji Trophy . He would come down to the centre of the pitch to hit the ball. He would be pestered by crowds who would cry " Jaw lal Four Traav "meaning Jawhir hit a four . And lo ! jawahir would listen and get out . There were many other players like Gulrez , Talat , Jogi and Bushan lal Handoo etc.

I have mentioned some names which i recollect . There were many more who contributed to development of cricket in kashmir . Most of them had learnt the game in lanes and bylanes of the city . Some would come to Idd Gah or pologround or Zind Shah Masjid ground Rainawari on sundays to learn the game . Some would go to SP college or Amar Singh College to play Mohalla matches . Some would make it on the road with a cheap bat and wooden Ball known locally as Beera .Rubber hand protection gloves , leg guards or Head helmets were nowhere to be seen in those days. only some boys from well to do families played with leather balls .Beera was heavy and hard but cheap and Popular. It could injure your body . It gave lot of pain to fingers during fielding . I saw one or two accidents taking place with Beera Hits in Polo groound each sunday where Mohalla teams from Amira Kadal , Badyar , Habba kadal ,Zaindar Mohalla or Sathu Bar Bar Shah would go to play cricket . Thus Poverty gave its pain in cricket as well .

This cricket fever still continues to be in Kashmir .Young Boys dressed in white cricket dress now go to Polo ground or Ram Munshi Bagh grounds or Iddgah on sundays to play cricket. Yes the Beera is nowhere to be seen . They carry the leg guards , Hand gloves , Wooden wickets and Sunshade caps . These play grounds are full on sundays .O! That Ram Munshi bagh Ground near Amar singh Club opposite Burn Hall School that saw West indies team playing a test match against India in 1983 is full with cricket players during sundays .Many clubs ,Well developed Bat industry and good number of sport goods selling shops make you to believe that cricket is the game of choice for kashmiris at present . That is the reason that we have been able to produce players like Abid Nabi , Arshad Bhatt, Sameer Ali and Vimarsh kaw for the Ranji squad . God keep this fever on. Let cricket be always in the air .

Dil  ke dariyaa ko kisi roz utar jaanaa hai
Itanaa besimt na chal laut ke ghar jaanaa hai

Mein Khilaa Hoon to isee Khaak me milanaa hai mujhe
Woh to Khushboo hai use agale nagar jaanaa hai .

Woh tere husn kaa jaadoo ho ke meraa Gam-e-dil
Har musaafir ko isee ghaat utar jaanaa hai .

FURREI FISH OF KASHMIR

"Maa Vunn Furrei"  In kashmiri language it means "Do not tell lies " .

kashmiris generally say this when they feel that some one is just bluffing or befooling them with  stories which are untrue .But then what is Furrei . O! it is the typical roasted   fish . When i was a child and would go to Zaina kadal with my mother , i  would see  many ladies selling this typical fish in Gaada Kocha or Bohri kadal .Most of these Furrie sellers are nowhere to be seen now .I feel nostalgic to find some one selling these furries in Zaina kadal and the buyers too attract my atention .Possibly there is a sharp change in eating habbits .People do not like Fish Cooked in this way now.  I remember that  one of our  distant relations  would bring them to his family and then cook them . Once i too had a piece of this  fish  cooked tastefully  . I  vividly remember  that Sh Ravi Koul  ( who happend to be a professor of chemistry in Gandhi Memorial College kashmir and a cousin of My friend Kuldeep Machama   ) to be fond of Furrei ( fish ). My friend  would tell me that Prof koul  would ask his mother to cook this variety of fish  for him.

To Make Furrei , kashmiris roast  fish  in Grass or wood  with a low grade fire while  In Europe  fish is smoked essentially to preserve it .  In Europe ,Saltwater brine is also used in the process  but smoking is again done in low grade heat at a temperature of 200 degrees F. Sometimes fruit wood is also used to smoke Fish. Salmon or trout is usually smoked in Europe .A process of Cold smoking has also been developed in Europe Mackerel variety of fish is usually cold smoked .Every smoked fish needs to be cooked . So do  Furries of kashmir need to be cooked .
That was the story on kashmiri Furrei ( Fish ).. Enjoy the views of Furrei (  fish ) sold in Kashmir captured in January 2010. I would also use this post to reply some viewers.

I have been asked by a reader to clarify as to whether Muhamed Ali Jinnah known as Quaide Azam In Pakisan had any Parsi Relations and who were they . He needs some details of these relatives of Quaid e Azam . This reader also asks me as to whether Hafeez Jalandhari who wrote the national Anthem of pakistan wrote any other popular song or poem also .I shall be attending to these questions through my posts only. Here goes my reply.

While on a vacation in Darjeeling in 1916, Jinnah fell in love with RatanBai Petit daughter of Dinshaw Petit a rich Parsi . Ruttie as she was called by her  numerous friends , was bright , well read , Intelligent and beautiful. They married in 1918 when Ruttie turned 18. The marriage was solemnized according to Islamic rites since Ruttie converted to Islam . Dinshaw opposed this mariage . Relations between Dinshaw Petit   and his daughter Ruttie  were strained after this marriage .A daughter was born to Ruttie  and since Jinnah was busy with his ever increasing work , Ruttie went to England with her Daughter named DINA for some time  .Ruttie came back to live with Jinnah but fell sick and had to live in Taj Mumbai as bed ridden . On February 20 1929 , Ruttie breathed her last. She  was buried in Mumbai according to Muslim rites . Jinnah is reported to have wept bitterly like a child  when asked to throw earth on the grave as the closest relative .Fatima Jinnah , Jinnah ‘s  sister took care of DINA and her brother after the death of Ruttie. Dina  had close and affectionate relations with her father . She went to very good schools in England . The relations between the father and the Daughter were marred by the fact that Dina wanted to marry a handsome Parsi Neville wadia .
The relations between the father and daughter remained  strained after this marriage as jinnah had opposed it .. Dina never went to Pakistan except to attend the Funeral of her father in Karachi in 1948 and later in 2004 to see a cricket match. Wadias lived happily in Mumbai .They had nothing to do with Pakistan . They had two children ; a son ( Nusli Wadia  ) and a daughter .The family owns a leading textile company and a private sector airliner in India .

Now something on Hafeez jalandhari .  Poet Mohd Hafeez jalandhari  was  a Punjabi born in 1900 at  Jalandhar .His ancestors were Suraj Vanshi Rajputs who converted to Islam. Hafeez Jalandhari was commissioned to write the new National Anthem for Pakistan after the death of Jinnah since Jinnah had selected  poet Jagan Nath Azad 's song as national anthem of Pakistan. . Hafeez jalandhari  also wrote the famous song Abhi to Mein Jawaan Hoon sung by Malika Pukhraj. Hafeez sahib is also the writer of following songs .

1
(Apne Mun Me Preet Basaa le )

Apne Mun Me Preet Basaa le
Mun Mandir Me preet Basaa le
O Murakh o Bhole Bhaale
Preet Hai Teri Reet Puraani
Bhool Gayaa o Bharat wale

Bharat Maata hai Dukhiyaari
Dukhyarain hain Sab nar Naari
Tu Hi Uthaa le sunder Murli
Tu Hi Ban Ja Shaam Murari
Tu Jaaga to Duniyaa jaagi
Jaag Uthein sab prem Pujaari
Gaayein Tere Geet
Bassa le apne Mun Me Preet .

2
(Pyaare Jhootha Sab sansaar)

Moh Kaa Dariyaa ,
Lobh Ki Nayaa ,
Kaami Khevanhaar ,
Mauj Ke Bal Par Chal Nikale The ,
Aan Phanse Manjhdaar .

Pyaare Jhootha Sab sansaar

Chole dheen Dharam ke
Nikale chor Chakaar
Inn Cholon Ki Aad Me Chamke
Dho Dhaari talwar
Pyaare Jhootha Sab sansaar

Here goes one of his popular song ( Geet )

Jaag Soze ishq jaag.

Jaag Soze Ishq jaag
Jaag Kaam Devtaa,
Fitnaa hai Nau Jagaa,
Bujh Gayaa hai Dil Mera,
Phir Koi Lagan Lagaa ,
Sard Ho Gai Hai Aag

Jaag soze Ishq Jaag .

Pad Gayee Dilon Me Phoot,
Kyaa Viyog Pad Gayaa,
Prithvi pe ye Chaar Khoont ,
Ek Sog Pad Gayaa,
Sar Nigoon Hai Sheshnaag

Jaag Soze Ishq Jaag .

SUNSET VIEWS OF JHELUM WITH A POEM OF AMRITA PRITAM

I have read Many books including Rasidi Ticket ( Autobiogrphy ) penned by Amrita Pritam, well known Writer from Punjab. Amrita ji was a good poet as well. I am not going to tell anything about her infatuation for Sahir Ludhianavi or anything like that . What I am going to present is her soul stirring poem “ Aaj Aakhaan Wariss Shah Nu ” ( Today I shall tell Waris shah ). Amrita ji wrote this poem on Partition riots . This poem I rate as finest composition on Human pain and suffering . The Punjabi similes and analogies make it one of the best poems on the subject . I am sure Waris Shah ((1722 – 1798) too would have been touched by these powerful emotions put forth by Amrita ji had he been alive . Waris shah was the composer of HEER . Heer is considered the Bible of Punjabi poetry. It is believed to be based on the tragic, but true, story of two 16th century lovers – Heer and Ranjha. Many writers of Punjab believe that Waris Shah  weaved  into his interpretation of this patehtic poem , his own love for a girl named Bhag Bhari.  I have no factual source to say so . I have heard it from many punjabis  especially from  those who have flair for reading  literature .This needs to be cross checked for its authenticity .

Many friends from Punjab would recite it at gatherings in Chandigarh during my visits to that city . During my posting  at Amritsar  Punjab , i heard this poem many times from friends .I do not know why, but I always felt a strong urge to translate the poem from original Punjabi. I did attempt that . But recently I found its translation done by one Mr Umair Raja as apt and appropriate . The person is a Punjabi from Pakistan settled in Europe possibly.Amrita ji's original poem in punjabi    gives references of the main characters and symbols of the Heer legend ( Waris Shah ) like Ranjha, his flute, his brothers, and Qaido (the villainous Uncle). One has to understand the Pluralistic  and cultural ethos of Punjab prior to Partition of the country to catch the feel of the poem.  I salute the effort . Enjoy “ Ode To Waris Shah ” with two sunset views of Jhelum river of kashmir captured in january 2010.

                     Ode to waris shah

Today, I call Waris Shah, “Speak from inside your grave”

And turn, today, the book of love’s next affectionate page

Once, one daughter of Punjab cried; you wrote a wailing saga
Today, a million daughters, cry to you, Waris Shah

Rise! O’ narrator of the grieving; rise! look at your Punjab
Today, fields are lined with corpses, and blood fills the Chenab

Someone has mixed poison in the five rivers’ flow
Their deadly water is, now, irrigating our lands galore

This fertile land is sprouting, venom from every pore
The sky is turning red from endless cries of gore

The toxic forest wind, screams from inside its wake
Turning each flute’s bamboo-shoot, into a deadly snake

With the first snake-bite; charmers lost their spell
The second bite turned all and sundry, into snakes, as well

Drinking from this deadly stream, filling the land with bane
Slowly, Punjab’s limbs have turned black and blue, with pain

The street-songs have been silenced; cotton threads are snapped
Girls have left their playgroups; the spinning wheels are cracked

Our wedding beds are boats, their logs have cast away
Our hanging swing, the Pipal tree has broken in disarray

Lost is the flute, which once, blew sounds of the heart
Ranjha’s brothers, today, no longer know this art

Blood rained on our shrines; drenching them to the core
Damsels of amour, today, sit crying at their door

Today everyone is, ‘Qaido;’ thieves of beauty and ardor
Where can we find, today, another Warish Shah, once more

Today, I call Waris Shah, “Speak from inside your grave”
And turn, today, the book of love’s next affectionate page

THREE VIEWS OF JHELUM (VITASTA ) NEAR PAMPORE KASHMIR

I found this poem in a Magazine . It is a popular Anti war and Pro Peace poem of Dina Nath Naadim , renowned kashmiri poet .I donot know  who has done this superb translation of Naadim's kashmiri poem  Baa Geiveh Na Az ( shall not sing today). Wonderful and beautiful translation from original kashmiri  .Enjoy it with some latest views of river jhelum ( Vitasta ) taken at Pampore ( kashmir ) recently.

Baa Geiveh Na Az su Nagmaah kenh,

Tei Kyaazi az -Tei Kyaazi Az ,
Be vaayi Jaayi Jaayi Taapeh Kraay Zun,
Beehith Chhi Zaag Heith,
Karaan Chhi Aayee Graayi Yuth Tsalunn ,
Yi  Myon Baag Heith .-----------------

( Dina Nath Naadim )

I will not sing today,
I will not sing
of roses and of bulbuls ,
of irises and hyacinths ,
I will not sing ,
Those drunken and ravishing ,
Dulcet and sleepy-eyed songs.
No more such songs for me !
I will not sing those songs today.
Dust clouds of war have robbed the
iris of her hue,
The bulbul lies silenced by the
roar of guns,
Chains are all a-jingle in the
haunts of hyacinths.
A haze has blinded lightning's eyes,
Hill and mountain lie crouched in fear,
And black death
Holds all cloud tops in its embrace,
I will not sing today
For the wily warmonger with loins girt
Lies in ambush for my land.

FIVE FACES OF KASHMIR IN WINTER

Nau e insaan pe ye sarmaaya o mehnat ka tazaad,

Amn o Tehzeeb ke parcham tale qaumon ka fasaad…
Lahlahaate hue kheton pe jawaani ka samaa,
Aur dehqaan ke chhappad mein na batti na dhuaan…
ye bhi kyon haI, ye bhi kya hai, mujhe kuch sochne de,
kaun insaan ka khuda hai, mujhe kuch sochne de,
Apni mayoos  umangon  ka fasaana  na  sunaa,
Meri Nakaam mohabbat ki kahaani mat chhed.

( Sahir Ludhianavi )

[Among humans, the contradiction of capital and laboUr
Under the banner of peace and culture, communities riot…
The wavy fields bestow a promise of youth,
While under the poor man's roof, there is neither candle nor stove…
Why does this happen, let me think!
Who is this God of ours, let me think!
Do not bring up the story of your defeated youth,
Do not bring up the issue of my failed  love.]

CAFE COFFEE DAY COMES TO KASHMIR

"No sir . We do not serve chicken Tikka or Kebabs . you can have chicken keema kulcha with spinach corn sandwich .you can  also have  strawberry blush or cold coffee "

said the waiter .I wanted to have something at CAFE COFFEE DAY  before changing my metro for Dwarka at Rajeev chowk . Incidentally whenever i go to Delhi , i make it a point to have my mini  breakfast at Nirula's food point in busy Rajeev chowk metro station . I never take anything in  trains for fear of   infections which i frequently catch up on my journeys . I have seen  Pantry Cars of almost all  the trains  .The lesser said  about cleanliness inside these pantry cars the better it is .Even the food served in Rajdhani can make you sick at times . This is my personal experience .
This time on 17th January  2010, i decided to switch over  to  CAFE COFFEE DAY   at Rajeev chowk metro station. The experience was satisfying . Not only was the breakfast lovely and clean as i would have liked to be  , it was also economical. I had Spinach corn sandwich with a glass of strawberry milk shake  . I spoke to the manager who inturn informed that everything is fresh , Hygienic and clean . He also added that Cleanliness is the hallmark of their kitchens . Try it once to believe me.
That was about CAFE COFFEE DAY , India's premier and largest chain  of coffee cafes, which has recently opened its outlet in Sriagar kashmir  as well. This outlet is located on Durga Nag Temple Road  in    Hotel AKBAR..One can also locate this outlet just near BURN HALL School srinagar .This area is normally busy with tourist traffic . One can have good vegetarian food at some Dhabaa on this road  . One can also  have good vegetarian food at some habbas on this road particularly KRISHNA DHABBA .Incidentally this Hotel Akbar  in kashmir is reported to be  owned by relatives of Bollywood actress katrina kaif.  Katrina  for sure is from   kashmiri background.

Cafe coffee day  outlet  in srinagar is designed to provide  world class coffee at affordable rates to people of valley . We already have a coffee outlet known as   Coffea Arabica on Maulana azad road . Thanks to Dr Haseeb Drabu Chairman J&K Bank for persuading the company to set up an outlet in srinagar . This chain already runs three outlets in jammu.Could Dr Drabu persuade  KFC( Kentucky fried Chickens )  to enter kashmir ?. That would be really  great . For readers i would like to add that cafe Coffee day is a part of India's largest coffe conglomerate called Amalgamated Bean Coffee Trading Company Limited. They also offer a variety of food items including snacks , desserts and ice creams.

Permit me to end this post with a small poem of my favourite poetess Parveen Shakir . The original poem in urdu is in free verse .A picture of Burn hall school has also been uploaded for viewers to enjoy.

Raqs karte hue,

Jis ke shaanon pe tune abhi sir rakha hai
Kabhi me bhee is ki panaahon me thee
Faraq yeh hai ke me
Raat se qabl tanha hui
Aur tu subha tak
Is fareb-e-tahaffuz me khoyee rahegee.

( Parveen Shakir )

While dancing,
the one upon whose shoulders you rest your head,
i too was once in his safeguard.
The difference is that i
was abandoned before night ,
and you shall remain consumed
in this false sense of security till dawn.

THREE VIEWS OF KASHMIR AND SAHIR LUDHIANAVI'S POETRY

Tum Chali Jaaogi Parchhaaiyaan Reh Jaayengi ,
Kuchh Na Kuchh Husn Ki Raanaaiyaan Reh Jaayengi ,

Tum Ke Is Jhil Ke Saahil Pe Mili Ho Mujhase ,
Jab Bhi Dekhuungaa Yahin Mujhako Nazar Aaogi ,
Yaad Mitatee  Hai Na Manzar Koi Mit Sakataa Hai,
Door Jaakar Bhi Tum Apane Ko Yahin Paaogi .
                          Tum Chali Jaaogi ---
Ghul Ke Rah Jaaegi Jhonkon Men Badan Ki Khushbu,
Zulf Kaa Aks Ghataaon Men Rahegaa Sadiyon ,
Phuul Chupake Se Churaa Lenge Labon Ki Surkhi ,
Ye Javaan Husn Fizaaon Men Rahegaa Sadiyon .
                             Tum ChaliJaaogi ----
Is Dhadakati Huyi Shadaab-O-Hasin Vaadi Men ,
Yah Na Samajho Ki Zaraa Deir Kaa Kissaa HoTum ,
Ab Hameshaa Ke Liye Mere Mukaddar Ki Tarah ,
In Nazaaron Ke Mukaddar Kaa Bhi Hissaa Ho Tum .

                          Tum  Chali Jaaogi------
(  Sahir Ludhianavi )

PS
This poem of sahir was picturised on waheeda ji and kamaljit in film Shagoon . It was sung to perfection by great master Mohd Rafi.  Words fail me to express appreciation for Khayam sahib for the soulful music he scored for this song. ).The views captured are old REC campus Naseem Bagh ,  Jhelum Bund near Sonawar srinagar and Dara Shikoh's Mosque  srinagar . These are  all late autumn views captured in 2009.

RAMCHANDRA JI TEMPLE SATHU BAR BAR SHAH SRINAGAR KASHMIR

" Moti Lal Aaj Nahin Aayaa . Bechaara Pareshaan Rehtaa Hai "

said swami ji to his followers sitting on a bed and smoking cigarette. swami ji was concerned about Shri Moti Lal Mattoo his disciple. That is how the saints in valley acted as fathers and parents to their disciples . This applied equally to Muslim Peers and Murshids .I saw him  in the house of Pandit Som nath  Koul Bagh at Abi Guzar srinagar  .That was my Massi 's house . I believe it was perhaps 1971. Swami Hare krishna had numerous followers in jammu and srinagar .I happened to know some of  his followers  from Rainawari especially  Pandit Moti Lal Mattoo and  Pandit Shyam Lal Peer  . I  also happened to know his trusted devotee Qalandhar Badshaah . Swami Ji would spend his time praying in a room at Ramchandra ji Temple sathu Bar Bar shah Srinagar .He spoke little  kashmiri but understood every sentence perfectly.Swami ji  spoke softly and would distribute half smoked cigarettes amongst  his followers ..Many Muslims too would visit him and Swami ji would ask his host to offer them tea and would also give them half smoked cigarettes.  I saw him Many times in his room in Ramchandra ji Temple sathu Bar Bar shah.During winters he woud go to Jammu or to Plains of india Upon my recent visit to this temple , i also visited the room where he would sit and pray.During entire summer season , Swami ji would cover his body with just one spotless white cloth .Sometimes in October he would use a shawl to over his shoulders. His personality had a grace and aura . None could remain casual in his presence .

That was the story about Swami Hare Krishna ji  who would stay at Ram Chander Ji Temple Sathu Bar Bar Shah Srinagar . I happened to know a  muslim motor spare parts trader from Haroon family living near the Temple . This particular gentleman , though a muslim would also pay visits to Swami ji in the temple and seek his blessings.

The temple of Ramchandra ji at  Sathu Bar Bar Shah is on a raised Platform. This temple is about 1 Km from Lal chowk and proximal to backside Gate of Sri  Partap  College. Srinagar  It is also about 100 yards from Sathu Bar Bar Shah Bridge . The temple complex is about 10 feet above ground level. It has a Hawan or Yagya shala , a residential building , six rooms in a row , open ground , and above all a central temple dedicated to Lord Rama . A grand  hawan would always be performed in this temple on Ramnavmi day . This Hawan would coincide with Spring festivals in valley .The temple was  managed by Dharmarth trust jammu and kashmir .Since 2002 the gates of the temple have been opened  again and a hawan is performed regularly now on Ramnavmi day.Enjoy some photographs of this temple  taken by me in july 2009 . I  am also adding  some lines from a poem of master zinda Kaul ( 1884-1965) to end this post .Master ji as he was popularly known in kashmir,  was brought up in extreme poverty . Struggling with poverty , sorrows and other pangs of existence  , Master ji gave a knew direction to poetry in Kashmir . He was well versed in Persian , Urdu and Hindi .His poems like Premuk Nishaan ( Token  of love ), Naa Taiyaari ( Non prepared ness ), Sanyaasi ( Sanyasi ) and KarNaavi Taarukh Na  ( O boat Paddler Take me across ) are a treat to read ..Incidentally Farooq nazki's sahitya award winning book Naar Heytun Kazalwans bears the title  taken from  poem Naar Haa ( Beware! It is Fire )  of late Master ji .Farooq Nazki pays due tributes to master ji in the preface of his  book. The lines are

Naar Heutun Kazalwanas ,
Shor Woth Bahaar Ha.
Diluss Heutun Jigar Taeteoy
Kraekh Gai Zi Naar Ha.

From study of his poems ,I could understand that master ji had great faith in the capacity of a man . He had a vision for the world .Enjoy some lines  from his poem Karnaavi Taarukh Na(O boat Paddler !Take me across ) This particular poem has been published in his book Sumaran.  I have attempted to translate the lines  for readers of this post  .

Where  every one shall have work to do ,
Where none would be idle,
Where disease , ugliness and falsehood ,
shall not come in  the way   of development of human mind, .
Where people shall have neither less nor more than what is  needed ,
where guns shall not blast  smoke and terror ,
where bombs shall not rain from the sky ,
where none shall be our enemy ,
where no armies shall fight each other .
O Paddler of my boat !
Take me to that world.!

FIVE LATEST VIEWS OF MARTAND SUN TEMPLE

Enjoy some latest views of sun temple of Martand with some lines from a poem of Kaifi azmi.

Hum woh raahi hain jo manzil ki khabar rakhte hain,

Paanv kaanton pe, shagoofon pe nazar rakhte hain,
Kitnee raaton se nichodaa hai ujaala hum ne,
Raat ki qabr pe buniyad-e sehar rakhte hain,

O’ Andhere ke khuda shamaa bujhane wale!

( from‘Pehra’ by Kaifi Azmi)

(We are those travelers who are aware about the destination,
With our feet on the thorns, we keep our sights on the flowers,
For how many nights we have kept awake,
We laid the foundations of the morning on the grave of the night.
O, god of darkness, extinguisher of candles! )
