subjectRe: All Saints' Church, Srinagar, and Cecil Barton
Dear Autar,
I'm sending some more photos which you may publish if you wish. This one shows Saint Lukes Church (compare it with your recent photographs at http://autarmota.blogspot.com/2009/10/churches-in-srinagar-city.html)
Dave
This is titled 'C.M.S. High School. Srinagar' [C.M.S. = Church Missionary Society] Above this photo Cecil wrote the school motto: "In all things be men", and the following note:
"This is the Central School. There are also 5 Branah Schools and one at Islamabad. There are 350 boys in this school and about 1100 altogether. The teaching staff are about 60, all except two Punjabi [are] Christians being old boys of the school. 9/10ths of the boys are Brahmins or Pandits as they are called in Kashmir. Each school has its own boat or 'shikara'. Every Tuesday in the summer they practise in the boats. Mon & Wed they play football or cricket. Gymnastics for 1/2 an hour every day in the playgrounds."Dave
This is captioned: "Boys jumping from the school classroom into the river."The writing on the photo says "Observe the salute!" and it looks like that could be Cecil himself.
Dave
This is labelled simply 'Maharaja's Palace'
