MISSION : REVIVAL OF TRADITIONAL THEATRE FORMS OF KASHMIR
MAN .MOTI LAL KEMMU
Meet Moti lal Kemmu or father of Bollywood director Ravi kemmu( who started as assistant to Shyam Benegal ) or grandfather of the talented and young bollywood actor Kunal Kemmu .Here is a man who has done renaissance work for otherwise vanishing folk theatre of kashmir .He gave new life to Bhaand theatre , Rouf and Hafiz nagma in kashmir .Surprising and unusal at that time , kemmu sahib joined the kashmir chapter of IPTA ( Founded by K A Abbas in 1945 )as a dancer in 1951.In 1953 Dina nath Naadim ( Noted kashmiri Poet ) visited China . There he saw an Opera “ White haired girl " .Back in Kashmir he wrote "Bombur te Yemberzal " and Noor Mohd Roshan, Ghulam Rasool santosh , Mohan lal Aima , Zoona begum , Raj begum , Pushker Bhan , Dwarika Nath Bakaya , Pran Kishore Omkar Aima , Girdhari Dass along with many artists joined to make this Opera a memorable performance witnessed by even the Russian president .Kemmu Sahib also got a break to work as an artist for the first time in this opera . Later he did perform in many plays at Shivala Chotta Bazar srinagar with various groups . He was an active member of Cultural conference in fifties .
A trained Kathak dancer Kemmu sahib went to Baroda to receive professional training in dance and drama In 1957 .Kemmu sahib acted in a Play in AIFACS Hall New Delhi which was being witnessed by Pandit Nehru and Dr S Radhakrishanan . After the Play was over . Pandit ji came to the Dais and patted himsaying " Very surprising for a kashmiri boy . Very Good . Very Good "
Back in kashmir , he wrote many plays but the mission for him was to work with Bhaands of Kashmir for revival of this vanishing theatre . It was Kemmu sahib’s motivation alone that Mohd Subhan Bhagat took the Bhaand Paather seriously and made it a well recognized Theatre form on international platform. Long back i saw a pather ( Play ) Jungle Tsoor ( Timber smuggler ) in Bhaand style .The crisp satirical / allegorical dialogues full of humour , the movement of Bhaands on the stage and the music on SORNAI ( A local version of shehnai )is still etched in my memory . I also saw the Raaza pather , Grees pather , Gosanai pather , Angrez pather and the Haanz pather performed by Bhaands of kashhmir . What a great mimicry they perform on the stage ?Kemmu sahib is credited for removing the Vulgarity of Wattal Pather by giving his own plays to Bhaands to perform .Many a times he was seen working in late hours in Akingaam and Wathora with Bhaands It goes to his credit to have introduced Musical and Daastaan style in Bhaand Paather . His kashmiri plays plays Nangay, Maznil Niku , Laila Majnu , Zien Mazoor Lal Bo Draayus Lolarey, Tota Te Aina ,Natak Truche and Haraam Khanuk Aeni became quite popular . He wrote TRUNOV , DHAK YELI TSALAN , SHAH PATHER , NAGAR UDASE , AKANANDUN and HEEMAL NAGRAI . His play Dakh Yeli Tsalan was translated in hindi and produced by NSD repertory as " BHAAND DUHAYEE" in Bhopal, Delhi and calcutta to packed houses .He wrote , directed and produced a large number of plays in kashmiri and Hindustani . So long so much about this Grand old man of Kashmir Theatre. I wish him long life and happiness.

MAN DR. MOHD SULTAN KHUROO
The year was perhaps 1985. My younger sister had sent a message that some doctor had advised her husband to go for an endoscopy. She was worried . I made her feel comfortable when i assured her that i shall be also joining them for this investigation at SKIMS Soura . We reached SKIMS at 1 PM . The endoscopy had to be done at 1.30PM. We were waiting outside the endoscopy room when suddenly at 1.20 PM some activity started in otherwise sleepy corridor. A tall men with a white Aprin walked in with a group of Doctors at 1.25PM . He asked for the patient . We went in . The smile of the man was infectious and disarming. Shortening the distance , It made you comfortable for any conversation with him.The patient was already prepared .
"He has no problem . A tiny healed ulcer is what i cold find . For that he needs to be worry free. I presume he smokes . He has to give up this bad habbit. He has to regulate his diet . Take lesser spices and keep focus on a fruits and Fibre . "
Said Dr Khuroo to me when he finished endoscopic investigation.He was extremely down to earth . Sharp , focussed and reassuring. Enter the world of Dr Mohd Sultan Khuroo a legacy of 24>< 7 work culture, a life devoted to research , Patient care and service . Do we know that Dr Khuroo is :-
The discoverer of Hepititis E a new disease entity . He stamped his position in the “History of Medicine ” by this discovery .
An authority on Esophageal , Gastric and Biliary diseases .
The first doctor to perform puncture and aspiration of Hydatid Cysts of liver .
I am informed by many doctors that :-
His Books and Articles on Heptitis E Virus , Hepato Biliary and Pancreatic Ascariasis ,Hepatic vein thrombosis in pregnancy ,Portal Biliopathy , PAIR for Hydatid Liver , and PPI in peptic Ulcer bleeding have been reviewed in journals of highest standard .
As a Head and consultant of Gastroenterology and liver transplantation in King Faisal Hospital Saudi Arabia , he is credited with setting up of the liver transplant program in that country . Dr Khuroo had to make a forced exile in 1995 due to turmoil in valley and threats to his life and honour .Since January 2005, this doctor is back with his patients and people . He has set up a Tertiary care Digestive Disease centre in Kashmir whereat he trains doctors and conducts research besides managing a ever crowded out patients department. This doctor has given much to his people and the land of his birth without expecting anything in return . We wish him long life and good health .

“ He will be a role model for generations to come . His clinical sense is comparable to that of Dr Ali Jan . Two Gems have been produced by GMC Srinagar . One is Dr sushil Razdan and the other Dr khuroo. ”
Concluding this post , i may add that i enjoy listening Rabbi Shergill. He sings Baba Bulle Shah(1680-1758 ) in a tone that is enjoyed by one and all. I heard him singing Bulleya ki Jaana Mein Kaun. Here is the translation of this great poem.
