ONE LAKH STRAY DOGS IN SRINAGAR CITY

If reports are to be believed , there are 1 lakh stray dogs in srinagar city creating havoc. You find them on roads roaming in groups . They are near the barracks of security forces . They are near the baker shops , butcher shops , tearing apart the garbage lying in dumps , moving in lanes and highways under the patronage of societies working to stop cruelty against animals. I had three narrow escapes . They bite liberally in true secular sense . They spare neither a Hindu nor a Muslim or a sikh . They bite the civilian , police man , School going child , college student , house wife , trader , transporter and  the tourist easily . Yes they have to bark and browbeat the rag picker perhaps thinking him to be a threat since he is entering their arena of Household waste dumps . For this man it is a question of survival . I have found them failing on  this front. Visit any hospital in srinagar to have the feel of the magnitude of this problem. Who shall clear the city of this Menace? I found Faiz Ahmed faiz too a supporter of their cause .

These vagrant, aimless streets dogs
the flair for beggary has been conferred upon them
their net asset is being scorned by their times
rebukes of the entire world their earnings
No rest in the evening nor reprieve at dawn
housed in filth, dwellings in drains
if they agitate, pit one against the other
show them a piece of roti
putting up with getting kicked by all
they tire of being starved and die
If this oppressed species were to arise
humans would forget all domineering
they can own the world if they’d only wish
they can chew up even the bones of the masters
Somebody stir them to feel their mortification
somebody move their sleeping tail.
