HAPPY SHIVRATRI TO MY READERS
Shiva is everywhere in Kashmir . In fact Kashmir is the abode of Shiva . Shaivism of Abhinavgupta was brought with simplicity for masses by Laleshwari or Lal Ded . Even Muslim Sufi saints , poets and rulers could not remain untouched .Sheikh ul Alam or Nund reshi also known as Sahja Nand by pandits sang in praise of Shiva . Kashmiri poets like Shah Gafoor , Rahim sahib , Shamas faquir , Samad Mir , Ahmed Batwari and Ahad zargar spoke of the dominant presence of Shiva in some of their poems .Even Ali Mardan Khan the Kurdish Mughal governor of Kashmir wrote a Persian poem “ SHAB SHAHE KI MUN DEEDAM - HUMA ASLE MAHESHWAR BOOD " in praise of Shiva which continues to remain popular with kashmiri pandits till date . Shiv leelas of Mahatma krishen joo Razdan are still sung in every Pandit household . Every kashmiri Pandit is touched by the soulful leela sung in sufiana style “Bell te Maadal – venn ghulaab pamposh Dastai " by Tibet Baqal sahib . I have not heard any other composition in kashmiri devotional music as this one from Tibet Baqal sahib.late Mohan lal Aima sang equally soulful Naat " Ya Nabi Gosh Fariyaadan Thaav "as a tribute to Tibet Baqal sahib's singing shiv leela.Photogrphs above show a VATUK PUJA in Progress in a kashmiri pandit family. Three photographs below have been taken by me at Rani Temple Gulmarg in August 2009 . A devout muslim Ghulam Mohd happens to be the only care taker of this temple . Kudos to him for keeping the temple in excellent shape.Gh Mohd ji has also been photographed standing outside the temple at Gulmarg .
Tuss padmaan Poriche lalle ,
Tummi Galei amrit peevo .
Tumm shiv Vuchh Thali Thali ,
Teuth me var ditta deevo .
Su Me nishe Baa Tuss nishe
Me Tuss nishe qaraar Aav
Naakhay chhondumm Me par deeshe
Paniney Deeshe me yaar Aav.
( Nund reshi )
That lalla of padman pora ( pampore )
she drank the amrita enough .
Then only she saw Shiva everywhere
Grant me such a boon my lord!
He is within me and i am his companion,
I am at peace in his company .
O heart ! How foolish of you to have searched him in different lands,
when he is abode lay in my own country .
